Alpacas are cousins to the more well known llamas, although they are much smaller. Alpacas can be found living in the Andes mountains throughout Bolivia, Chile and Peru. The alpaca has made his home in those areas for the past 1000 years.

The alpaca is thought to be a descendant of the vicuña. Although the vicuña remains a wild animal, their smaller cousins seem to have adjusted well to domestication. Interestingly, alpacas don't have hooves. Instead, their feet are very similar to a dog's pads and contain only two toenails. This unique animal also produces the most luxurious fiber that can be found anywhere in the world.

Unlike their more aggressive relative, the llama, an alpaca will rarely spit at a human. They tend to use spitting as a communication tool to relate to their fellow alpacas.
