One of the first things that a child learns are the letters of the alphabet. The activities in this lens are ones that my children and the children I have taught either in a classroom or while homeschooling have found to be fun and engaging.

By offering a wide variety of materials around the room in different centers, children can choose the activity or material that intrigues them most at the moment the skill being taught.

Come explore hands-on, learning alphabet activities that make the alphabet as easy as ABC...

The Pretzel Alphabet

Of course you have heard of Alphabet Soup as well as Alpha-Bits Cereal but have you heard of Pretzel Alphabets?

Now you can learn the alphabet, practice spelling and vocabulary words or play a multitude of other letter games at snack time.

One day I set out a bowl of Pretzel Alphabet Letters on a table to see what the kids would come up with for a center time activity. A couple of kids choose that table and started to see what words they could make. They decided that they could only eat the pretzels if they could form them into a word.

Each time they made a word they ate the word as if they were hungry monsters gobbling up the language.

The Pretzel Alphabet is now a favorite center time activity enjoyed by hungry language eating monsters.

If you are writing in print rather than cursive, you can write all of the letters of the alphabet with pretzel circles and sticks.

One of our favorite ways of learning the letters is by using pretzel sticks and balls to form the letters in print. We write our names, high frequency words or spelling words and then gobble them up.

Talking Alphabet Puzzle

Alphabet puzzles are always a hit but when I ran across this ABC puzzle that also says the sound as well as a word that begins with that letter, I couldn't resist adding it to the collection of Alphabet Activities.

Because it does make noise, and you do not want to disturb others in a classroom setting, I suggest that you include it in a Take Home Literacy Bag rather than using it in a center.

Be sure to look for other Melissa and Doug wooden alphabet puzzles to use in your centers. I like to use wooden puzzles because they feel good and last a long time.

Note: Coding each of the puzzle pieces on the back makes it easier to sort them if they get mixed up.

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom

Evelyn Saenz's book recommendations, reviews, favorite quotes, book clubs, book trivia, book lists

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom is one of our favorite alphabet books. The rhythm of the words just invite children to get up and dance. They are fascinated with all the bandages and bruises the letters receive from falling out of the tree but in the end, all the mammas and pappas, uncles and aunts reassuringly come to pick them up and take care of them.

In this lively alphabet rhyme, all the letters of the alphabet race each other up the coconut tree. Will there be enough room? Oh, no -- Chicka Chicka Boom Boom!

The well-known authors of Barn Dance and Knots on a Counting Rope have created a rhythmic alphabet chant that rolls along on waves of fun. Lois Elhert's rainbow of bright, bold, and cheerful colors makes the merry parade of letters unforgettable.

Teaching the letters of the Alphabet

What are the best ways to teach the letters of the Alphabet?

Magnetic Alphabet Letters
Melissa & Doug Magnetic Wooden Alphabet

The wooden pieces to the Melissa & Doug Magnetic Wooden Alphabet feel great and the primary colors invite children to move the letters around in order to discover combinations that form words. My children always loved to push three letters together and ask me to pronounce them. They would laugh and be silly but when a real word was formed we all jumped around and did a dance.

I know that you probably don't want me to advocate TV watching... but Leap Frog's Letter Factory taught my son his letters and sounds with no effort. It was amazing!

groovyoldlady says:

We had 2 sets of colorful magnetic letters - both uppercase and lowercase - and we used them ALL the time. We'd practice the letter sounds and letter names. We'd play "Here's an M, Can you find MORE M's?" etc. Now my girls are proficient readers and the grandkids play with the letters.

Old Black Fly buzzes around the Alphabet

An Alphabet of Food

Here is a unit study to accompany the poem Old Black Fly. The fly touches of food all around the kitchen from A to Z in this rollicky rhyme of a pesky old black fly. It's one of my kid's favorite unit studies for summer months when the windows are open and the flies are buzzing.
