Figs ... They're Not Just for Newtons!

Fig trees thrive in California, where the first trees were planted at the San Diego Mission in 1759. The Spanish missionary fathers planted fig trees throughout the state as other missions were built. This is how the Mission Fig, the most popular black fig, got its name. We have two trees in our backyard, but the squirrels usually beat us to the figs, which must be left on the tree to ripen. Most Americans have never eaten a fresh fig, which is a shame. The flavor is quite different than dried figs and the ubiquitous Fig Newton. In other parts of the world such as North Africa and the Middle East, figs are used as sweeteners in place of sugar, just as they were in historical times.

The Common Fig

A Few Facts Courtesy of Wikipedia

The Common Fig is widely grown for its edible fruit throughout its natural range in Iran and Pakistan and also in the rest of the Mediterranean region and other areas of the world with a similar climate, including California, Oregon, Texas, and Washington in the United States, Nuevo León and Coahuila in Northeastern Mexico as well as Australia, Chile, and South Africa. Fig can also be found in continental climate with hot summer, as north as Hungary, and can be picked twice or thrice a year. Thousands of cultivars, most unnamed, have been developed or come into existence as human migration brought the fig to many places outside its natural range. It has been an important food crop for thousands of years, and was also thought to be highly beneficial in the diet.

I've never had the pleasure of a fresh fig. Would love to grow some figs. That fig pudding is calling my name. Yum! Seems your squirrels have excellent taste. ;-)

Fresh, sun-ripened figs are a tasty treat, and very healthy. My grandfather grew figs tress and even though I live in the Northeast, I keep his tradition alive by growing one of his fig shoots in a container.
