Today, honey and beeswax are produced in large amounts by beekeepers from all over the world. The number of people keeping bees is increasing in the United States, Africa, Asia and many parts of Europe. There is a huge difference in the way beekeeping was carried out back in the olden days in Europe to the modern day version of high tech industry. Over time it has been affected by each unique culture and it is amazing to see how this differs from one place to another.

A useful point to remember is that honey is used mostly as a food additive in many cultures, often in religious and celebratory occasions when preparing certain meals to sweeten it. Most Americans who enter beekeeping produce honey to supply the local market and for shipment to countries that do not possess honey bee producers of their own. This is because often they are not advanced enough to mass produce the necessary amount to ship overseas to stores owned and operated in the United States like Whole Foods Market because they carry specific brands.

Most overseas countries don't have a beekeeping system the way the United States does to mass produce a single product like honey since we manage to harvest effectively which means we can produce enough to meet the needs of the market. Bees produce honey when flowers are plentiful and spring is the time for honey producing in the Unites States. Restaurant owners and restaurants worldwide which use honey in its menu, often gets its supply from the home country.

Beekeepers often spend time every 7 to 8 days watching hives, and most find it to be a good way to pass time during the weekend. The best thing is hives don't need much maintenance; often one hour would be more than enough for hive watching. Around 60 to 100 pounds of honey are produced for each good beekeeping season, and the market price per pound determines how much money you will make from each harvest.

One very irritating challenge for the beekeepers is the presence of bumblebees in the beekeeping season, because these large yellow and black flying creatures feed in the same areas as those honey bees. Bumblebees live underground; they become menace to beekeepers as they swarm and feed on flowers that should preferably be, from the beekeeper's point of view, left for the honey bees. In order to help increase honey production, beekeepers will move the hives to a new location where there is ample supply of fresh flowers for the honey bees to feed on. Each batch produced can differ with individual pollinations or when hives are rotated; bees go to different flowers and that's why sometimes honey may have distinct taste since it's the type of flowers available to them at the time of migration.

Beekeeping School or Lessons

Training to be a beekeeper is a time consuming skill that many take seriously because you have to share a passion for something that was once declared a simple hobby to which has joined the billion-dollar food market. Now that honey is a considerable part of the world's diet, it is obvious to see that beekeeping has evolved far beyond the hobby stage. The biology of the average bee is something that is a major part of beekeeping, and many individuals who were not raised with it as a hobby have to learn this from another experienced beekeeper. Considering that the flowers bees need are in short supply during the winter, bees cope by storing regurgitated food, which we in turn call honey.

It is incredible to observe the manner that bees use to survive during winter. Because bees usually produce only in the warm weather, most beekeepers have a back up option during which they are farmers. This hobby can be expensive, because you have to know where to put the boxes for the bees to build their hives.

You have to train yourself in entomology so that you do not allow other insects which feed on your bees, which include yellow jackets, hornets, wasps, and mites. Beekeepers need to get their training and expertise through science, so that they can give a good habitat for their bees, manage them effectively, and prevent pests from taking over hives. There are a lot of steps involving the proper education and training of a beekeeper and what you're looking for is someone who is serious and dedicated to a way of life that's been a tradition in some families for generations.

Often times, people view the skill as something that is passed down through familial tradition and the way of life that they learned through great-grandparents, grandparents, and parents. It wasn't even about making money it was actually just one other chore on the farm, but in the years it slowly progressed into a farm staple that was being sold like it was produce, meat and dairy, but it's still a profitable market anyway you look at it and it's one of the sweetest things in the world.

Used Beekeeping Stuff

You need to get a set of reliable beekeeping equipments before you can start a profitable beekeeping hobby. You must buy this equipment before the post office calls you to come collect your bees. You cannot get started without investing in the beehive first.

You must ideally get a beehive that has five supers. Since the supers are the place where the bees will store their honey, you cannot neglect them. All the five supers must be placed in the space of the beehive between the bottom and the cover. Supers are not used just for storage of the honey, they are also used for raising the young bees. During its peak time, each of the super will contain about nine to ten frames. You have two options with supers - the shallow ones and the deep ones. When you get a hive with a deep super, you will need to purchase just a single size of foundation. However, a full deep super can weight as much as 100 pounds. But you can prevent this by keeping it on a level surface. Take care to confine your beehive in an area where pets and people are not likely to disturb it. If you want to arrange the frames in an equidistant manner while they are inside the super, you will need a spacer.

After all this, you will need to get hold of a smoker. The smoker helps you to get the bees out of the hive whenever you want to get the honey from it. There is not much to speak about the structure of a smoker. The basic design of the smoker includes a combustion chamber along with a funnel and bellows. For that reason, it is the professional choice as ignition substance in the smoker.Your smoker will work excellently if you use burlap in it because it ignites quite fast and produces profuse amounts of smoke after smoldering. You may also plan on using corn cobs, provided they are dried out. Light the fire in the combustion chamber.

The next thing you will need is a metal hive tool. Your metal hive tool will come in handy when you have to pry the hive open, separate the compartments of the hive and for its cleanliness. Think of it as the all purpose tool of beekeeping. It is quite unwise to get you're live bees before getting your bee brush. In order to study the frames, you will have to get the bees out of the way.

Use a fumer board to effectively remove the honey. This is a special board dabbed with bee repelling chemicals. eBay has lots of inexpensive beekeeping material. You can get both professional and amateur beekeeping stuff from catalogs and websites.
