Alternative Candy Hearts

Change the Conversation

Pink construction paper and little white envelopes are two classic childhood reminders Valentine's Day, but the only Valentine that's almost as tasty as library paste is the Conversation Heart - that little candy heart, likely made by the folks who make Necco Wafers, with a sweet saying printed on it. The hearts you'll buy in the store have holiday-appropriate sayings like "Love You" and "Kiss Me" along with some more modern messages like "Txt Me" and "<3 U".

But what if those sentiments don't truly express your feelings this Valentine's day? What if you need something different to handle your distinctive, quirky, love - or the depths of the self-pity you're wallowing in following a pre-Valentine's Day breakup? For someone special like you, there are alternatives to the classic candy heart that will let you have your Valentine's Day candy without selling out to the trite 2-line romantic drivel of the masses.

Make a Picture

It'll last longer.

Maybe you don't need real hearts with a message. Maybe the idea of candy hearts is good enough for your Valentine cards. There are two handy candy heart generators out there that will let you create your own candy heart images, which you can then use to your heart's content. (sorry.)
ACME Heartmaker
The ACME heartmaker lets you create a candy heart with 2 lines of text, 4 characters each. Be creative!
Cryptogram's Candy Heart Generator
A more flexible candy heart generator, allowing 4 lines of text; but I think the picture is a little less convincing than ACME's. There's a "Goth" option that gives you a black heart, should you be in the mood for one.

Despair :-(

Photo from despair.comWhen you're really not happy, send that message with a box of artificially-flavored candy. Despair.com offers three collections of unpleasantly and unlovingly inscribed hearts in their Bittersweets line. Each heart-shaped, printed tin - Dejected, Dumped, and Dysfunctional - contains 6 ounces of hearts, with malicious messages like "GAME ON TV," "I GOT SOBER," and "SETTLE 4 LESS?" The tins are printed with the same messages, so the sentiments can stew long after the candy's gone.

Write Your Own

Seriously.

Photo by Lenore of Evil Mad ScientistIf you want something done right, you have to do it yourself, right? No one can express your love quite like you can - especially if the essence of your relationship has to be distilled down to something that will fit on a piece of candy the size of a dime. So the very helpful Lenore over at Evil Mad Scientist has a very helpful set of instructions for stamping your own candy hearts. It's much less frightening than you'd expect something that starts "Evil Mad Scientist" to be, as long as you watch your fingers. Go check it out.

Make Your Own

Why not go one step further?

Photo from Serious EatsIf you want your candy hearts to be really, truly yours - a gift from the heart, as it were - you can make your own. Jessie Oleson of Cakespy offers a candy heart recipe on Serious Eats, so you can make candy hearts in any color or flavor you want. Just don't try to make them good for you. When Necco tried to change their recipe to make a more natural candy, customers rebelled and sales dropped 35%. Some traditions just can't be changed.

If you don't want the classic candy heart, or the stylized heart shape, try this instead. Nothing brings on the Valentine's Day romance like a cold, quivering, heart on a platter. Be sure to fold some sour cream or yogurt into your Jell-o to get a nice opaque look.
