Alternative Spain

Spain is a firm favourite with tourists and has been for many centuries. The climate, food and friendly people bring people back year after year. Many people seem to only visit the two major Cities, Madrid and Barcelona or spend a week or two in the Spanish Costas. This is a shame, as although the Costas are a great holiday spot, there is alot more that Spain can offer.

Santiago de Compostela was probably one of the very first tourist spots in the World. It has been attracting pilgrims from all over Christendom for Centuries and this has not stopped. There is plenty to see and do in this vibrant City and as Spain's capital for religion it has more than enough of cultural sights. Many people hike across Northern Spain to get here, along the Camino de Santiago and you we see some of these hardy people as you sit relaxed at one of the many street cafes around the old centre.

Cordoba, in the heart of Anadlucia, is one of spain's historical gems. With Moorish architecture and whitewashed Andalucian buildings, this has to be one of the most beautiful City's in Spain. Cordoba has as much to see and enjoy as it more illustrious neighbours in Seville and Cadiz, but seems to have been left off the international radar. This is a pity as it is one of my favourite City's in Spain. Andalucia is justly famous for its fiestas and carivals and Cordoba has its fair share. If you get the opportunity to witness one of these mardi gras, you won't leave dissapointed.

Finally, but certainly not least is San Sebastian the costal City of the Basque. This busy and cosmopolitan resort is the hideaway for the elite of Spain and international visitors have not seemed to have noticed this bustling resort as of yet. Many might of been put off by the threat of terrorism by the Basque sepratist group ETA, but they have since signed peace deals and the region is once again safe. San Sebastian has a true Spanish atmosphere and is an enjoyable alternative to the busy Costas.
