Ranked #7,702 in Cars, #402,206 overall

With All The Talk Of High Gas Prices, What Are Some Alternative Fuel Sources

As we've seen for many months, cars can be expensive to operate. Maintaining your automobile and putting gas in them can really hit you in the pocketbook, especially for those who work outside the home.

In addition to the expense, we're slowly becoming more and more aware of the danger our environment is in.

One of the largest causes of pollution in the United States is from car emissions. Most of these emissions are harmful to the environment.

Many people are looking for, and open to, Alternative Fuel Sources to power their cars. However, it's important to understand what you're getting into before jumping in.

Electricity As An Alternative Fuel Source

Electric cars are one of the more viable options currently available for conserving our existing fuel and do show promise. However currently there are issues with the weight from battery storage sources. In addition, we'd need a larger network of recharging facilities which and right now, because there are so few, travel range is limited.

Biodiesel Fuel

Biodiesel Fuel is another interesting choice and it uses vegetable oil as an Alternative Fuel Source. This could be our most promising alternative fuel source right now. By developing and using Biodiesel Fuel, we are helping to reduce air pollution and make America less dependent on foreign oil.

Biodiesel Fuel is a clean and burning fuel refined from fresh or recycled animal and vegetable oils to other energy sources. Consumption of this Alternative Fuel Source is predicted to increase to 1.2 billion gallons by 2030, or approximately 1.5% of total diesel consumption.

Cars can be converted to use Biodiesel Fuel rather easily, which makes this alternative that much more appealing.

Ethanol

Ethanol, an alcohol based Alternative Fuel Source, is widely traded its use in the fuel as well as food and pharmaceutical industries. The current ethanol production worldwide of 36 billion liters is expected to rise to 210 billion liters by 2030.

Fermenting and distilling starch crops that have been converted into simple sugars produce ethanol. Feedstocks for this fuel source are typically corn, beets, grasses, barley and wheat.

Ethanol fuel is ethyl alcohol, the same thing in alcoholic beverages. It's widely used in Brazil and has proven to be good for the environment and cheaper to make than gasoline. But the question arises, how high will our grocery bill go if the world uses Ethanol?

Methanol

Methanol is similar to ethanol. It can be made of wood or coal but is usually made from methane. Methanol alone cannot be easily blended with gasoline to produce a usable fuel.

Natural Gas

Natural gas should also be considered, as it is as safe or safer than gasoline. Argentina and Brazil have major considerable natural gas reserves and some of the highest natural gas vehicle populations in the world.

Fuel costs are rising at record highs around the world. Scientist and entrepreneurs are searching for solutions that will ease the pain at the gas pump. Alternative Fuel Sources are the answer, with options for the masses.
