Alton Brown's Gear For Your Kitchen

A Must-Have Reference Guide For All Cooks

I've been following Alton Brown's Food Network show "Good Eats" for several years now and I told myself that I would collect all his cookbooks so I could have all his recipes. Tell you what - if you are a proud owner of one of Alton's cookbooks, you wonder if it's really a chemistry textbook or a home-improvement manual. Alton Brown's Gear For Your Kitchen is the only reference book I need in my kitchen. Sorry Fanny Farmer and Betty Crocker, but you guys don't have the wit, wackiness and scientific pizzazz that Alton brings to the kitchen table! You will learn about Sharp Things, Pointy Things, Small Things With Plugs, and mundane stuff like The Proper Way To Pack a Cooler.

Are you Bob Vila, Fred Sanford, Robin Leach, Jack Benny or MacGyver?

Not Exactly A Mad Scientist

This book is funny, brilliant, charming, opinionated, and rich with anecdotes and useful trivia. Alton has the rare gift of making science fun and fascinating. Barometric pressure, chemical reactions, molecules, thermal conductivity - and this is a cookbook? (yes, there are recipes in this book like the killer Cherry Pie on the Fly). It also has blurbs with scientific and historical trivia, tips and tricks, and personal recommendations on various kitchen tools and appliances. If only my high school science textbooks were this cool!

Do you know your knives?

Do you know what a "tang" is?

Full tang, half tang, pin tang or rat-tail? Huh?
So I never knew what a tang was until I read this book. The tang is the part of the blade that the handle is attached to. Did you even know this? The chapter "Sharp Things" explains more about the tang, among other things. You will learn about the parts of the knife, knife edges, the various types of knives, and how to keep your knives sharp. This was a fascinating to me as I have a small knife collection at home. After reading this book, I realized that I did not have the "right" kinds of knives for for what I need. Oh, and I also did not have the right cutting board either. See, I've learned so much already!

What's in your kitchen?

Pampered Chef or Home Depot?

"Expensive isn't always better." Alton says.
Why spend $20 on a pie server when you can get a mortar trowel from Home Depot for a mere $4?
A $6 sheetrock taping knife from the hardware store works just as well as fancy $12 brand name board scraper.
Alton goes to the garden center to buy a flowerpot to cook roast chicken. Terra cotta pot or Calphalon? Do the math!

splendidbaker says:

After reading this book, I learned that the hardware store has a lot of tools and gadgets that you can use in your kitchen, at half the price of brand name utensils. Who would have thought? Loved this book. You gotta get it!

Sorry, not my cup of tea.

Fabulous overview of Alton Brown and his entertaining and practical hardware store "finds". Whenever I watch his show, I always look for that big white chicken. Hey another hardware store find that even Alton Brown might approve of is...using a stainless steel rasp (I buy at Lee Valley tools) for grating hard cheeses, garlic, and ginger. It rinses clean, is sleek and fits in neatly in the dishwasher.
