How do you know if you love someone? Are you falling in love?
To quote Christian from Baz Lurhman's film Moulin Rouge "Love is like oxygen! Love is a many splendored thing. Love lifts us up where we belong. All you need is love!"
Do you remember the first time you asked yourself am I in love? The curious thing about love is the variety of ways in which Cupido's arrow can strike. Sometimes its love at first sight other times it creeps up on us and catches us unawares. A sure sign of that is when everyone else can see what's happening and you respond with a coy "oh no we're just good friends"
Because the question 'am I in love?' is a rhetorical question it means we are trying to make sense of a whole range of feelings and events. Why did they leave that coffee cup next to mine? why do I get butterflys when they get into the elevator with me? why do I find everything they say so incredibly hilarious?
I remember the first time I asked myself the question. I was 14 years old. It was quickly followed by 'why am I in love?', 'is this what love is?' and 'how do I know if they love me too?'. This happened when I was on holiday, and had to spend 2 weeks away from my 'girlfriend'. I had a massive crush and spent most of the holiday sketching remembered images of her. When I got back she'd got together with another guy! So question 3 was answered point blank. Ouch!

What is the psychology of love? Well it seems that depends on your level of analysis. You can look at the social psychology, the emotional and cognitive levels and even the neuro-biological and neuro-chemical levels. It seems the deeper you go into the detail the further you get from the idea of romance though.
I mean imagine staring into your lovers and saying "The Vasopressin levels are rising and my Oxytocin rate is sky high, I haven't eaten for days because my Norepinephrine is taking over...I love you!"

The thing is that he reckons that all of the emotional stuff we experience when we 'fall in love' are driven by these basic things. With 'Love' being a drive that ensures reproduction and continuation of the species.
Not exactly the territory of romance again. Interestingly Freud does bring up the subject of Narcissism or 'self love' which can have a detrimental effect in relationships at work and home. Which begs the question, with who are you in love? Someone else or yourself!
