Our Visit to Amazement Square

Amazement Square - Rightmire Chidren's Museum - Lynchburg, VA is a hands-on children's museum! Kids of any age can climb, slide and tunnel their way through four floors of exciting, interactive exhibits and activities. Amazement Square is located on the corner of Jefferson and Ninth Streets along the riverfront of Downtown Lynchburg, VA.

If you have kids and live near Lynchburg or are planning to visit this area, you should be sure and take them to this "amazing" museum! Also, nearby is a Skate Park for more entertainment, several restaurants (including the The Depot Grille next door), a Farmers Market, and of course, the downtown stores for shopping.

Recently, I went with my son, Brian, and his son, Douglas (age 3 1/2 years), to visit Amazement Square. They have a yearly membership, so it is their routine to visit every Friday. I decided to tag along one Friday and enjoy the fun! I took lots of pictures so that I can share our visit with you!

The Amazement Square Tower...

is the tallest indoor climbing structure in the nation!

Amazement Square has the tallest indoor climbing structure in the nation! It extends through four floors and then up to an observation deck on the roof! Only the young and brave should visit the observation deck, as you have to climb up to it in a tunnel and go back down the same way! I did NOT do this, but my son did, and I wasn't sure he'd make it back! Have you ever tried to climb down a tunnel??

The Amazement Square Tower includes a tunnel that runs through the entire four floors, plus a maze of slides, ladders, and even a zip line to go from one level to the next. You can also choose to use the light-up stairs (my mode of travel) or go by a glass elevator for a unique experience.

The Big Red Barn

Down on the Farm!

The first thing Douglas likes to visit is the Big Red Barn. Children under 4 years can learn how to milk a life-size cow, visit the chicken coop, pick corn, haul vegetables, and learn about life on a farm through books and exhibits.

Discover Silver

Design your own teapot!

The Changing Gallery has rotating exhibits with themes of regional and national significance. When we visited, the gallery featured "Discover Silver!", a collaborative project of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) and Amazement Square. This was a very interesting exhibit for any age.

Exhibit as described by Amazement Square website: "Step inside Paul Revere's silversmith shop and try your hand at creating your own silver objects. Explore the intricate patterns and details found on teapots, pitchers, and other silver items. Uncover how the beautiful silver objects of the past represent modern objects of today. What role did silver play in our past? What significance does silver continue to have in our lives today? Discover the answers to these questions and more as you Discover Silver."

Douglas designed his own teapot!

Ancient Egypt

Visit the Pyramids!

Ancient Egypt: Life & Afterlife on the Nile was being showcased on our visit. It is a hands-on interactive exhibit that includes a display with a (fake) mummy inside. (You can see the mummy a little in the next picture.) Douglas was a little scared of this, but kept wanting to look again. He couldn't figure it out, I think. It also shows examples of what's inside of a pyramid. And, you can build a pyramid!

Ancient Egypt: Life & Afterlife on the Nile exhibit as described on the Amazement Square website: "Ancient Egypt: Life and Afterlife on the Nile. Developed by Amazement Square, this exhibition enables museum visitors to learn about Egyptian hieroglyphics as they record their own history in hieroglyphics. Visitors can also explore every-day life working as a farmer or pharaoh, or they can sail down the Nile in an Egyptian Royal Hunting boat. In preparation for the afterlife, visitors can build the Great Pyramid of Giza, prepare a body for mummification and explore the treasures of a pharaoh's tomb!"

Raceways

Golf balls in motion...

In the Raceways section there are different size roller coasters and raceways that kids can send golf balls down. It shows different ways of getting the balls down the tracks and how long it takes through various scenarios. This is one of Douglas's favorite places to explore! See the golf ball rolling down the roller coaster?

Voltageville is nearby, but I didn't get any pictures of that on this trip. It is very educational, but a little too advanced for Douglas.

Once Upon a Building

Block Party!

In the Architectural Gallery - Once Upon a Buiding, kids learn how buildings are constructed and can design their own home with an interactive computer program! They can learn about historical buildings and operate a crane! There are many other hands-on learning opportunities in this gallery.

Block Party is Douglas's favorite! These are large soft blocks made for building and knocking down! There are large and small blocks available for building and Douglas likes them all.

Your Amazing Body

Douglas gets an Anatomy lesson...

A Walk Through Heart takes you on an actual "walk through the heart" to learn about the functions of the heart and respiratory system.

Discover how exercise effects your health with Pedal Power (race bikes through the Blue Ridge Mountains) and Virtual Sports Holopod (play your favorite sport).

In the Examination Room, pretend to be a doctor, surgeon or nurse and learn about the functions of the body and anatomy. There's an actual "patient" with removable parts!

Board a Bateau

On the James...

Pretend to be onboard a bateau going down the James at this exhibit. There is a movie depicting a voyage down the James in the 19th century. The museum even furnishes period costumes for the kids! A fun experience!

Navigate a miniature bateau down the James through locks and canals. You can also make a rainstorm over a model of downtown Lynchburg.

Indian Island

This authentic Monacan Indian Village was created to teach the rich culture of the Monacan Nation. Or, kids can create their own village in an interactive diorama. Other interactive programs can also be found here. This Indian Village is my favorite exhibit!

Archeological Dig

Uncover artifacts at The Dig and reassemble them in the Field House.

Kaleidoscope Gallery

Painting, Dancing, Music, Books

The Kaleioscope Gallery includes the "Paintbox", "Dance, Dance", "Listen to the Rhythm", and the "Book Nook" hands-on exhibits.

The Paintbox has glass walls and kids can actually paint their own creations on the walls!

Dance, Dance is a virtual reality exhibit that shows colors through body movement.

Listen to the Rythmn is a glass enclosed music studio that includes real instruments. You can have a group jam or private session. Headphones are provided and you can't hear the music unless you have one. You can choose to hear each instrument seperately or together as a group, depending on which headphone you use. This is very kid friendly and hands-on.

The Book Nook is just what is says...kid friendly books!

Brian and Douglas were star performers!

Fun for any age...

Yes, he did slide down that slide!
Looks like fun, huh?

The View From the Roof

Good-bye for now!

The view from the roof is fantastic! It's a little tricky getting up there and back down again, but Brian said the view is worth it! (Since he didn't take a picture of the view, you'll have to take his word for it!)

This concludes our trip to Amazement Square! Brian, Douglas, and I hope you enjoyed the pictures! If you're ever in the area, be sure and drop by for a visit!
