Lyrics of original song -Amazing Grace!

Lyrics of Amazing Grace - by John Newton

==========

Amazing grace! (how sweet the sound)
That sav'd a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.

==========

'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears reliev'd;
How precious did that grace appear,
The hour I first believ'd!

==========

Thro' many dangers, toils and snares,
I have already come;
'Tis grace has brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.

==========

The Lord has promis'd good to me,
His word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be,
As long as life endures.

==========

Yes, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease;
I shall possess, within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.

==========

The earth shall soon dissolve like snow,
The sun forbear to shine;
But God, who call'd me here below,
Will be forever mine.

Faith's Review and Expectation

Faith's Review and Expectation

"Amazing Grace" was composed between 1760 and 1770 although it was not listed under this name in the Olney hymns. It appears under the title: "Faith's Review and Expectation" and has the Scripture reference of 1 Chronicles 17:16-17.

Rev. John Newton (1725-1807). John Newton wrote a song that told the story of his life. 1 Chronicles 17:16 was the verse that inspired him to write Faith's Review And Expectation. The verse reads, "And David the king came and sat before the LORD, and said, Who am I, O LORD God, and what is mine house, that thou hast brought me hitherto?" The verse of the song that reflects the 1 Chronicles passage reads this way - "Thro' many dangers, toils and snares, I have already come; 'Tis grace has brought me safe thus far, And grace will lead me home."

Bright shining as the sun,
We've no less days to sing God's praise
Than when we'd first begun.

Amazing Grace in Cherokee

"The song, "Amazing Grace", has great significance for the Cherokee.
Seventy years after John Newton composed the lyrics for this hymn, thousands of displaced Cherokees sang the hymn as they were herded along the tragic Trail of Tears (1838-1839). In 1830 the U.S. Congress passed the Indian Removal Act. The Cherokee Trail of Tears resulted from the enforcement of the Treaty of New Echota, an agreement signed under the provisions of the Indian Removal Act. Cherokee men, women, and children were forced to travel 1000 miles west, often on foot, to new reservations."

John Newton - About the Author of "Amazing Grace"

Slightly Edited From: crossway.org

"Newton had given up all religious convictions with his mother's death when he was a child. However, on one of his homeward voyages (as a slave ship captain), a violent storm ensued and he found himself desperately steering the ship for his life. He recorded in his journal that it was here that God intervened with a "great deliverance" and mercy upon all of them. May 10, 1748, was the day he celebrated as his conversion. Saving Grace was awakened in him." He later becomes a preacher and works with the poet William Cowper who relocated with Newton at Olney, They jointly began a series of weekly prayer meetings. Their goal was to write a new hymn for each week (see Olney Hymns). Amazing Grace was written between 176-1770,
