How to Make an Illusion Costume

Instructions for making an amazing Halloween costume!

The illusion costume looks amazing, and it can be hard to figure out how to make one. Here are the instructions!

Start with a costume of the character you want to have carrying you. This can be a monster, a gorilla, a witch, clown, even a giant chicken! Use your imagination or go with a costume you already have laying around.

First make some fake legs by stuffing a pair of your pants with newspaper or quilt batting. Fasten some socks onto the end of the pants. Some sites suggest using duct tape, but if you really want it to stay on you should probably sew it. It does not have to be pretty. Just baste it on there. Then fasten the pants to a belt you can put around your waist to hold the pants up. These are going to hang on the front of your body, so your bottom will not be in them. They will hang in the front like an apron.

Next cut a hole in the belly of the costume. Your legs & hips are going to be inside the costume, but the top part of the costume will be behind you.

You will put the top of the costume over a tall backpack that you will strap over your shoulders. You will need to fashion a head by stuffing something inside a rubber mask and fastening it to the top of the backpack.

Then stuff the costume arms and wrap them around your waist to make it look like the monster, ghost, witch, duck or whatever is carrying you.

With these instructions in mind, you can easily create all sorts of variations! Have fun and please send me a link to a photo of your costume! If I like it will add it to this lens!

The most amazing and funniest is too X-rated to mention here, but it was homemade and since then (30 years ago) is now manufactured by costumers, but not as well done as this 1st original was. Great lens!

I once was "Edith Ann" the Lily Tomlin character in the big rocking chair. I don't like blood and gore costumes.

I had a lot of fun one year dressing my son up as a cootie bug. You can get as creative as you want with something like that. But.. this box carrying costume is outrageously fun!! I also saw one as a dog with a wind-up device on it's collar. Too cute. I want to do that with my 8 horses, that would be quite the sight out in the pasture. LOL

I have gone as a Pink Lady from the movie Grease--but that is about as creative as I get.

A teenage boy wearing a trench coat. He said "are you ready for this, lady?" and whipped open the coat. Around his waist he had a flashing red light. He was a flasher. Very funny.
