So what do we know about the Amazon Tablet?
The device will be a small form factor tablet with a 7" touch screen. This is a similar form factor to the Kindle which has a 6" screen plus keyboard buttons. It's something that you pop in your purse or briefcase to use on the train while commuting, take to bed to read/watch before you go to sleep, take on vacation with you, take to the coffee shop etc.
The Amazon Tablet will run a heavily modified version of the Android operating system.
It's the modern Walkman but supporting video now as well as music and books. But it's more than that too ...

What can you do with an Amazon Tablet?

- 1Read eBooks. The Amazon Tablet (or Amazon Kindle Tablet as it may be called) will of course have an eReader. Amazon has already released an online eReader that can be used on PCs and tablets - the Amazon Cloud Reader. The tablet will support reading and buying eBooks. Of course the Amazon Tablet will have a color screen so we'll have support for color books. (This makes it a direct competitor to the Barnes and Noble Nook Color.)
- 2Browse the web. The Amazon Tablet will also have a Web Browser over a Wifi connection.
- 3Listen to music. You will also get the Amazon Cloud Player for music.
- 4Shop!. Amazon has recently redesigned their website to be more tablet-friendly and to focus on digital media. Amazon want us to buy stuff from the Amazon tablet. Especially digital media.
- 5Watch videos. And you'll have the Amazon Instant Video Player for watching movies, TV shows and other videos.
- 6Play games and use apps. The Amazon Tablet will have the Amazon App Store for games and tablet apps.
Amazon Tablet Media Subscriptions
Amazon don't just want to sell us a tablet PC. They want to sell us digital media products. This was the case with the original Amazon Kindle and it's the case here too.
The Amazon Tablet will need a subscription to Amazon Prime to get video on demand. It comes with a free one month trial.
There are also rumors of an Amazon eBook rental service which would be a kind of Netflix for books. (I love this idea.)

Who is the Amazon Tablet for?
So who will want this small tablet PC with lots of media integration? I think this device is going to be popular with the mass market. It will be used by commuters and travelers who want to watch a movie or TV show while they are on trains and planes. It will be small and light enough to take with you like the current Kindles.
It will be used at home to resolve disgreements over what to watch on TV. And to watch a show outdoors or in bed.
It will be used by families with young kids to look at (color) eBooks together and for older kids to read chapter books on. And to use educational apps and games. It will be what kids move on to when they outgrow learning tablets like the Leapster LeapPad Explorer and VTech InnoTab.
My Mum just bought a small tablet as a low cost option to use to browse the web in the living room (their PC is in the study and often used by her partner). If the Amazon Tablet had been available then it would have been the perfect choice for her. She's an occasional internet user and would use it mostly to shop.

The Amazon Tablet will not have eInk technology. Lots of people love their Kindle's because they are easy on the eye and make a change from staring at a computer screen. Those people are best off with the current Kindle 3 range of eReaders.
The Amazon Tablet is also not suitable for those who what a big high performance tablet like an iPad. For those people the best option is to wait for a larger Amazon tablet next year or choose on of the other 10" tablets on the market. Personally I'm going to wait for the larger Amazon Tablet.

How much will the Amazon Tablet cost?
We expected the Amazon Tablet to cost $250 in the US. This is about the same as the Nook Color but with access to Amazon's huge media library and the familiarity of the Amazon brand.
But, no, it's $199. You do need to pay extra for Amazon Prime if you want instant video access though.
