Announcing the Big Screen Kindle DX!

After months of speculation, the new, big-screen Kindle DX from Amazon.com is here! On Wednesday, May 6, 2009, Amazon.com announced its latest version of the popular Kindle wireless reading device and started taking orders. The Kindle DX is now in stock and shipping, to very good reviews. The new Kindle DX is designed with a much larger, 9.7 inch screen (compared to 6 inches for Kindle 2), very newspaper and textbook friendly. In fact, the big-screen Kindle is being used at several universities by fall, preloaded for students with information for some selected classes. The DX is also very business document friendly and includes a PDF reader, so its market certainly goes far beyond that of college students. Check below for more information and details, including Kindle DX pictures.

The problem I see with the Kindle line of ereaders is that the technology is changing to rapidly to command the price of the DX. The Kindle2 was only out 3 months when the DX was released, what is to say a color model won't be out in the next 3 months. Reduce the price of the DX and people will flock to it, especially if you offer a rebate for at least the Kindle 2 owners. I will definate buy one, but not until the price is reduced. I have been bitten too many times by early adoption of technology products.

Ah Susan, you tempt me that you do however I am a thrifty old lady that is sticking with her original Amazon Kindle. Heck, I've only had it a year -- I like to keep my gadgets for about 7 years before upgrading. ;) It looks pretty cool though.

I have yet actually to hold a Kindle 2 in my hand, though I've been trying to see one for a couple of months. The real issue will be the screen and book design, as well as the interactive features. Is it really significantly easier to read on an eInk or Plastic Logic screen? Is that ease of use worth giving up the advantages of, say, a NetBook or Mac Air, which is also a computer and Real Soon Now probably a phone? I'm curious but not convinced.

I so much love my kindle 2. I can understand the bigger size, but if they make it bigger, then its going to get harder to carry. I carry mine in my purse when I go out. I honestly wish that they did have these a few years back when I was taking 4 english classes back to back. From what I can tell from the picture it looks like a kindle 2, just bigger with some improvements.

What a great invention! These have so many uses such as classrooms as you mentioned. I think they would be great for sailors on deployment as they take up so little room and you can load so much reading material onto them.
