Amazon Associate Program

What is the Amazon Associate Program?
Amazon.com, Inc., is an American-based multinational e-commerce company founded in 1994 with headquarters in Seattle, Washington.
Amazon is America's largest online retailer as of January 2010. Very early on they capitalized on the online shopping phenomenon that was taking place and leveraged with the power of the internet.
Online shopping is become so convenient and commonplace with easy access to comparison shopping, for example. Most people are living hectic lives and are trying to save time. The trend in online shopping is increasing and shows no signs of stopping.
This trend has opened up a huge opportunity for sellers online. With the rise in blogging and consumers looking for reviews on products before they buy, Amazon has come up with a way to leverage from this which gave birth to the Amazon Associate program. To learn more about the Amazon Affiliate Program and more importantly how you can capitalize on this home-based income opportunity, read on...
Amazon Associates Affiliate Program
Make Money Online with the Amazon Associate Affiliate Program
The Amazon Associate program is essentially an affiliate marketing program to help anyone who wishes to sell Amazon products. Individuals like sellers, website owners, bloggers, stay-home moms & dad and others are leveraging on this opportunity.
Basically, Associates can create Amazon product links, banners, widgets and aStores and post them on their websites or blog sites in order to monetize their websites and blog sites.
When customers click through those links and buy Amazon products from their sites, Associates earn up to 8.5% (Canada) and 15% (US) in referral fees. It's free to join and the tools provided make it easy to use.
Note: You DON'T get paid to refer others to become Associates - you only earn a referral fee when customers buy from your unique links.
What is the Application Process?
Amazon Associate Affiliate Program Application Process
- To become an Associate, CLICK HERE and follow the steps below:
- choose the country at the top-right corner of the website;
- click the "Join now for FREE" (blue button);
- enter your email address;
- choose "I am a new customer";
- click the sign-in button and follow the instructions
As soon as you complete the application process, you will receive an email welcoming you. However, Amazon will review your application and in case there are any issues they will get back to you. If your application is rejected, you can re-apply.
Note: you will have to provide the URL(s) of websites and/or blog sites that you will be using to display and promote Amazon products. Please read the Associate Agreement carefully.
Amazon Associate Promotion Tools
Amazon Associate Affiliate Links, Banners, Widgets, aStores
Amazon allows its Associates to create text and image links, banners, widgets and aStores in order to promote products that they are advertising for.
These promotional tools can be customized based on what you want to display. You can even change the colors to match your website or blog. If you'd like to, you can include Product Previews to enhance the product links.
Once you are happy with the way the promotional tool looks, you just copy the automatically generated HTML code and paste it to your website and/or blog site.
Below you will find examples of a sample product link, banner, widget and aStore that I created in the Amazon back-office. It's a fairly straight forward and simple process.

Sample Amazon Product Banner Link

Sample Amazon Product Widget Link

Sample Amazon aStore Product Link

- I found the aStore to be a really cool promotional tool to have on your website or blog site. I will list down below some of the cool features of the aStore:
- can be customized for colors and themes to suit your style;
- search feature;
- "browse by category" feature;
- "similar items" feature;
- informative product descriptions;
- editorial & customer reviews;
- shopping cart; and
- much more.
Amazon Associate Program Tracking Reports
Keeping track of Amazon affiliate campaigns and sales
Amazon provides detailed affiliate reports in order to identify consumer preferences, traffic, conversion rates, earnings, link types, etc. to help effectively optimize the performance of the program. You can use this information to determine what's working and what's not, and accordingly make necessary changes.
Amazon Associate Tools for Squidoo
SquidUtils for Amazon Associates on Squidoo
If you are an Amazon Associate who uses Squidoo as your online writing platform, I would definitely recommend using SquidUtils which comes with a toolbar and a workshop add-on. SquidUtils is free and was created by a fellow Squidoo lensmaster, thefluffanutta. With this tool, you can create various types of links, posters and banners, as well as get feeds and stats. Click the links below to learn more about SquidUtils and download this very helpful online marketing tool.
Poll: Amazon Associate Program
What are your thoughts on the Amazon Associate Program?
I've contacted a few Associates and most of them have said that they are either making some money with it and/or see the huge potential of the program.
I've came across one guy who is making a 6-figure income with this program. I personally see the potential in the program, however, the key is to effectively optimize websites / blogs sites and tie the products with good content.
How to Optimize Your Blog or Website?
Amazon Associate Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
One of the key ingredients in making any blog or website successful is by drawing targeted traffic to it. If you read that sentence again, you will notice I said "targeted" traffic. You want interested people to come to your blog or website so they can benefit from your content and ultimately shop.
Today, most people when they are looking for something whether it be answers to specific questions, directions to a destination or comparison shopping, they use search engines. I'm sure at some point you've "Googled" when looking for stuff. Currently some of the most popular search engines are Google, Yahoo and Bing (MSN).
In this particular section, I'm not going to get too in-depth into search engines, however, sufficed to say that people are using the internet (through search engines) when looking for stuff. This is where Search Engine Optimization (SEO) comes into play. Simply put, SEO is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to your website or blog.
So let's discuss how we can achieve this, thereby bringing your website or blog to the forefront of those people looking for the content, services or products you have to offer.
Content is Still King
One of the most important things to always keep in mind is to provide quality content. As they say "Content is king"! Some people are so focused on SEO that they compromise on the content, please don't do that. There is are ways to balance the two as I discuss below, the power of using keywords and keyword phrases in your content. Also, another important aspect about content is to keep it focused and not cover too many topics in one post or page.
Inbound links
Inbound links is another aspect of SEO which will help in optimizing your sites. Search engines looks for quality and high rank links that your sites are connected to. There are many ways of doing this - one of the effective ways to do so is to interact with other website owners or bloggers in the same area of interest as you.
Another way to get inbound links is to join groups or directories of similar interest to your topics and submit your links to these sites.
Keyword Research
Keyword or keyword phrase research will help you before you write your content so you are aware of how to incorporate them into your content - in essence, you're making your content "keyword rich". Google has a free tool called Google Keyword Tool.
Basically, once you identify the keywords or keyword phrases, you ensure that you include these in your URL, title, sub-title, bold keywords, name images with keywords and of course include them in the body of your message/post. Having said so, please don't stuff your content with keywords. The norm is to not exceed about 15%, some go higher, but I would not recommend that and more importantly keep it relevant to your topic.
Blog Organization
Organize your blog or website so as to allow readers to easily find your information. This can be done in several ways: having a neat archive of posts or articles which are listed under specific topics, having a site map, table of contents, inter-linking your posts and pages to one another so as to facilitate easy access to relevant content, making it easy for readers to go back to the Home page (if they get lost).
Pinging
Pinging search engines is a way of nudging them to let them know that you have updated your website or blog. Sometimes it does take a while until your website or blog is indexed by search engines and pinging them is a way to do so instead of waiting.
You can either notify them individually, like using this Google Ping Tool to notify the Google search engine or notify multiple search engines at once. To notify multiple search engine at once, check this Squidoo lens that covers several Ping Service Websites.
Blog Updating
And finally, don't forget to keep your website or blog updated regularly bearing in mind that SEO is a process and may/will not happen overnight. The key is remaining consistent with quality content and like I said, keeping it regularly up-to-date!

- Yes but I need to pay attention to SEO and keywords and the suggestions in this lens! Very helpful resource! Thanks for putting it together! I generally use the SquidUtils when posting products. Question: I've seen lenses with what looks like an Amazon mini store on their lens, as well as the search boxes. I didn't realize we could do that. It looks like a widget but maybe it's all hand coded products. Do you know how they do this?

- Thanks, your feedback is much appreciated! In terms of your question on the Amazon search boxes, Squidoo does have a module called Amazon Search. I'm not exactly sure what you're referring to when you say Amazon mini store.
Maybe you're referring to Amazon Feeds (available through SquidUtils) that allows you to display Amazon products like a little store. There are several options for displaying products like top Sellers, New Releases, Most Gifted, and Most Wished For. Also, if you're well-versed with HTML / CSS, you can create your own code that looks like a store, but that can be cumbersome.
The widgets and aStore, available via the Amazon back-office, use iFrames which Squidoo doesn't support, so you can't use them on your Squidooo lenses, unless of course, you just use it as a big image hyperlinked to the aStore URL. Hope I'm making sense. Feel free to email me if you have any specific questions.

- You don't necessarily need a website to become an Amazon Associate. If you have an active blog and/or Squidoo lenses, you can apply and be approved. This is exactly how I applied and got approved. Rather than looking at what sells best on Amazon, identify your niche and target best selling products in that niche. You need to couple quality content with relevant products. It's good to have a combination of seasonal and evergreen topics that you can attach products to. Feel free to email me using the "Contact Me" button on my Squidoo bio page and I can share more insights with you, if you're interested. Wishing you all the best!

- Excellent information on the Amazon Associate Program. I have been a member for about 10 years, but I really haven't been able to capitalize on it so far. I do get lots of clicks, but haven't managed to turn them into sales unfortunately, which is frustrating. One day... I hope this helps people who are thinking about joining gain more information, blessed.

- Thanks for providing your candid feedback on the Amazon Associate Affiliate Program. I joined the program in April 2010 and have been able to take it for a test drive. I have to say that it does take a lot of hard work and effort as well as patience and consistency. I found that sales lenses with just enough content do better than purely content focused lenses as far as conversion rates are concerned. So my plan is to focus more on such lenses.

- I've been an associate for many years, and use Associate-O-Matic to create my own stores. Amazon has made a lot of changes since I've been with them, and while I don't make as much money from the program directly as I used to, I still generate a fairly steady income stream monthly.
To be fair, I don't devote as much time as I used to developing and promoting my stores. I'm more involved these days with creating templates for the software. See http://www.aomskins.com for more information. I still am a great devotee of the Associate program.

- Actually, in my early days I set up my account up as well as my first website. I did not know enough about tracking my websites so I was surprised when I started getting a few dollars from Amazon every other month. So thanks for the info looking forward to jumping back to this monetization method.

- Yeah, it does take time, effort and tracking to see what's working and what's not. I think it's more of an art than a science, but there are some basic guidelines to follow to make it worthwhile.
