The only thing you can do from Amazon at the moment is to buy an older Kindle model or well Kindle Touch. There is still no firm release date but we do hope it will be in the first half of 2012.

You can alternatively try your luck on Ebay. Kindle fire can be purchased from Ebay, or wait, wait and wait and hope the release date hits us soon!

So why were they not available worldwide?

There have been some speculations and some sources have said that this has to do with licensing laws and other legal technicalities regarding data collection and transfer. As you buy books through these devices, data about your purchases is stored by an U.S. company and because of this it is in breach of European data protection laws.

What the real case for the delay of Touch and Fire models was remains unknown.

Am I wrong while trying to purchase the Kindle Touch via international shipment to Germany and getting this message:
    ------
Kindle Touch, Wi-Fi, 6" E Ink Display - for international shipment is not currently available to ship to the selected non-US address. To shop for Kindles available to ship to you, please visit Kindle on Amazon.de.
    ------
Or this announcement is not quite accurate.

    Greetings

Greetings! This seems to be a recent development, I have looked into it and it seems that EU countries that have their own Amazon company (.de, .co.uk .fr...) have been excluded from international shipping which hopefully means that these countries Amazon stores will be stocking up on Kindle Touch. As for other countries it is still available to ship internationally. I will keep track of it.

As of now Kindle Touch is available in Europe. Just keep in mind the additional costs in VAT and customs...

Thanks for your comment. On this note I have to say that Amazon is very transparent when it comes to additional costs (VAT, customs...). When I placed my order for my Touch device Amazon calculated the additional costs and included them in the final price so you pay them in advance - so there is no "unpleasant" surprises later or dealings with customs =)

I've actually emailed Amazon about this, and they said that if the real customs duties exceed the deposit they've charged, then the shipping carrier can send one a bill for the difference.. Could you post here once you get your kindle, and let us know if it all went smooth?

In my case the custom duties were less than Amazon charged me so I got a small refund from Amazon =) (about a month after the purchase so it was a nice little surprise).
In most EU countries custom duties are not charged for items that cost under 150?, so you "only" pay for the import tax - Amazon seems to have information for all the countries so the calculation should be all right. Amazon also charges the tax on shipping costs (which some countries consider as a service) which in my case were not taxable and that's why I got my refund (I guess =)

    I meant 150 euro there =)

Ah, I forgot about the 150 euro rule.. awesome, thanks a lot for explaining :)
