Amazon is the largest online reseller of books. After branching out into general online retail, it also began to integrate vertically e.g. buying out Booksurge (now Createspace). They support the Kindle ereader and offer an affiliate scheme.

BookDepository is a UK based bookseller. Retailing worldwide, Bookdepository offers free shipping to all locations, which is a major competition point and has enabled it to seize a sizeable market share. They support the Nook ereader and offer an affiliate scheme.

Recently Amazon and Bookdepository announced an intended merger.

The Pro: Both companies are in the same business. BookDepository states that it will continue to run seperately and not be integrated with the larger Amazon operation. The shelter of the larger Amazon umbrella could allow BookDepository to grow further.

The anti: While the companies involved say it is a fairly trivial deal, the Booksellers Association and Publishers Association have announced they are opposing it on competition grounds. For example, BookDepository currently supplies the Nook, not the Kindle. Removing this format would leave many Nook readers in the UK and overseas unable to get books. There have been concerns about occassions when Amazon has been accused of leveraging its market power to the detriment of small publishers or authors (including a monopolies case in the US that's only just been settled here).

Right now a lot of people who write on platforms like Squidoo are worrying about the way things are going with the Amazon affiliate program (terminating affiliate accounts in some states). Just the other day somebody was talking about Book Depository as an alternative to Amazon. If the merger affects the affiliate programs for Book Depository, there will be some very unhappy people.
