Easy Walks around Ambleside - Suitable for Everyone
Easy walks around Ambleside suitable for all ages
If you are going to Ambleside with your family and you want walks which should be easy so that you can walk with your family and enjoy it most, then Ambleside will not let you down. I visited Ambleside this year when i stayed at Grasmere but being close to Ambleside, we made Ambleside our base for walking. But being with family, I also wanted to do easy walks which can be finished by everyone.
The best guide for information about these easy walks around Ambleside can be obtained form a small set of leaflets which you can buy from the Ambleside Tourist Centre in town centre. Look for Post office in Town centre of Ambleside. And when I bought these this year they were of yellow Colour. But you can find set of leaflets enclosed in transparent envelope with title Lakeland Leisure Walks.
Here is address of Ambleside Tourist Information Centre:
Central Buildings, Market Cross,
Ambleside, LA22 9BS
015394 32582
Photos of Tourist Information Centre can be seen below in Photos of Ambleside and Walks around Ambleside section.
Look for Post office in Town Centre. Information centre is located inside that. You can buy these Leaflets for just £1.95 (prices what I paid this year 2008)
At the time when I bought this pack of Lakeland Leisure Walks , it was titled as 5 Exciting Walks around Ambleside. Look at section Photos of Ambleside and Walks around Ambleside.
5 Exciting Walks Around Ambleside
These are easy to do walks referred in section above
This guide comes as pack of 5 walks with its front page looking like following when I bought it. But colour might have changed, you can just ask at Information Centre for this set of leaflets. I think these are best selling leaflets and easy to follow if you don't want to follow unusual routes and tough routes. These are beautiful and enjoyable.
Here is how front page of these set of pages which I have scanned for readers of this page so that you can easily recognize this when you plan to buy it from Ambleside Tourist Information Centre. I am not scanning eash and every page as that will violate the copy right.

When I visited Ambleside in Lake Disctrict, I did three walks from the above guide.
- Lake Windermere
- Loughrigg Fell
- Stock Ghyll
I will be describing two of these walks which I loved most out of three we did. Also I will share few photos of some of views on these walks. Look out in sections below for my experiences on two of the walks that I loved most in Ambleside.

Best Walk from Ambleside
Lake Windermere Walk in Ambleside - The Walk I Loved Most
You start this walk from town centre in Ambleside and then go uphill. AFter walking for around 30 mins you will start seeing Windermere Lake towards your right hand side. Views all along the way are stunning. Its best to appreciate the views and take some rest from some of points on the way on this walk. There are some stunning views along the way. One of the photos which I clicked is below. If its not perfect photo, please consider that I am not professional photographer :) .

After walking around 2 hours, you will start walking downhill towards Windermere Lake.

While you are coming downhill, there will be beautiful views of Windermere Lake Marina. And finally you will reach a road which connect Windermere with Ambleside. In front of you will be beautiful Windermere Lake Marina.

After you reach Windermere Lake marina, you will then need to walk along the road for around 500 meters. After that you again leave road for sometime and you will reach shores of windermere lake. It is perfect place to sit with you family have a break. If its beautiful sunny day then you will just feel like sitting on a beach. Believe me it is great feeling sitting on shores of lake here as you will be feeling tired after the uphill walk. Rest here along with views of lake, you will love it.
After this point, you pretty much walk along the road back to Ambleside town centre.
2nd Walk in Ambleside which I loved - Loughrigg Fell Walk
Walk around Loughrigg Fell in Ambleside
Walk starts from Ambleside town centre and you walk through Rothey park. After Rothey park, you start walking uphill after crossing the Rothey Park.
After walking for around 30-40 minutes you reach base of Loughrigg Fell. You will reach a point where there will be water filled hollow to your right, from here you need to follow downhill path. The high crags of Loughrigg Fell will be over to your right. At this point there will be a beautiful place to sit down, have a break and appreciate the beautiful views.
Views from the point where Laughrigg Fell crags are towards your right hand side.

After this point, you walk further for around 25 mins and you will come across beautiful views of Grasmere lake.Lake will be to your left. you will have option to go to the shores of Grasmere lake if you want to, but that means you need to keep more time for this walk.

After you cross this view point, you will start walking downhill and after walking for around 20 mins, you will reach beautiful shores of Rydal Water. Again great place to sit and have a break before you start walking back to Ambleside.

Some Tips if you are travelling to Ambleside
Here are some tips for smeone who is going to Ambleside
- The hotels and B&B in Ambleside are expensive than surrounding areas. As Ambleside is hub for people who visit this particular part of Lake District. But there are some nearby villages and towns such as Grasmere. And you can find some Hotels and B&B there cheaper than Ambleside. Only downside is if you are starting walk from Ambleside, you need to drive from Grasmere or take a taxi. If you have a car then driving is good option. As it is just few mins (around 5-7) drive from Grasmere to Ambleside.
- If it is Week End and you are starting your walk from Ambleside, make sure you start walk not too late from Ambleside. As you will need to find car park spaces in Public car park in Ambleside. And on week ends in Summer these car parks gets crowded after 10-11 am.
- If you are driving down from other parts of UK to Ambleside for your holiday, then plan well. If you are starting you holiday on public holiday, best is to drive there on last working day before bank holiday and that too plan to arrive around lunch time in Ambleside. Roads gets very crowded a day before bank holiday after 12-1pm.

- As the new proprietor of Lakeland Leisure Walks I will be carrying on the good work of Ross Pincott. The existing range is regualrly updated (just 3 weeks ago in the case of walk 5) and I will gradually be adding easy to follow cycling routes throughout the Lakes (three exist already - 2 in Kendal area and one from Windermere to Grizedale and back). A new website is imminent at www.lakelandleisurewalks.co.uk allowing online purchases.
