American Bandog Mastiff

While not a "purebred", the Bandog Mastiff is wonderful mixed breed that just wants to be loved and love you back. A great fit for any family.

I've compiled some great information here to help you with your search on the American Bandog Mastiff. Enjoy!

The American Bandog Mastiff: A Magnificent Mastiff Breed

It's true that the bandog mastiff is not technically "purebred," at least not as some other breeds are. However, these dogs are simply glorious and possess an impressive ancestry. They are part American pitbull terrier and part Neapolitan mastiff. At present, though, no kennel clubs recognize this breed.

But don't let that deter you from considering ownership of this most exceptional canine. His history may be short, but he possesses an abundance of loyalty and love.

The breed itself is only a little over 40 years old. It exists thanks to two dedicated American mastiff breeders. In the 1960s, American veterinarian John Swinford decided to breed the ultimate in guard dogs. He crossed an American pit bull male terrier with a large, strong Neapolitan mastiff female. Another American mastiff breeder, Joe Lucero, also helped this breed evolve. He calls his dogs "American bandog mastiffs."

Although you find variations of this breed, those developed by Lucero and Swinford will give you the most stable dogs. They have an even temperament and are exceptional guardian dogs.

The American bandog mastiff can be recognized by his athletic look and prominent musculature. Most dogs in this breed are black brindle, but some are blue, black, red or tawny.

Surprisingly, the dog is quite docile. Even though he is bred to protect people, he projects an attitude of quiet confidence, perhaps because he realizes his size. Generally, these dogs weigh between 100 and 140 pounds.

But more than this, the American Bandog Mastiff is a highly intelligent dog. And Dr. Swinford were he alive today, would be pleased to know that this canine does, indeed, make an excellent guard dog. The breed as a whole though does possess one small disadvantage when it comes to this task: they're reluctant to bark. It's common for dogs to bark a warning, not only for their owners to know someone is around, but also to warn the intruder not to continue his journey much farther.

These dogs also simply crave attention. They're loyal friends to people and they don't want to be left alone. If you're ever in doubt about that, simply ask the neighbor of someone who owns one of these dogs. Simply, a bandog mastiff is likely to howl the entire time you're gone.

As is typical of most mastiffs, the American bandog mastiff only wants to be with its owners, to please masters, and of course to protect the family. Indeed, the bandog mastiff can get along with other household pets as long as it has been raised from puppyhood with them. Even cats and kittens are fine. However, it can be aggressive toward animals it has not been socialized with.

Considering their massive size, you might think that this breed would not be comfortable in a small space such as an apartment. However, it's fine as long as you exercise your dog regularly. And make no mistake; your dog does need its exercise.

Grooming, too, is a snap with these dogs. They're very easy to take care of. As compared to other dog breeds, the American bandog mastiff is merely an "average shedder." Brush regularly so that you remove the dead hair, and you should have no difficulty.

Finally, if you choose to adopt an American bandog mastiff, recognize that you've not just let him into your home but your heart as well. You and this newest member of your family should enjoy many happy years together.
