Dick Clark Kept America Rockin' for Thirty Years

Before there was Soul Train, before there was Solid Gold, before there was even MTV, American Bandstand introduced new pop music and new dances to people around the country and let real music fans rate new songs in front of millions. Dick Clark was the emcee and, from 1957 through 1987 on ABC, introduced Top 40 radio acts, and the way that kids were dancing to them, to a ravenous set of fans.

With acts ranging from Adam Ant and ABBA to Andy Williams and War, the show ran the gamut of popular music and you never knew which artists would appear to "perform" their big hit of the day. You did know that you'd be dancing around your living room and trying to figure out some of the moves those teens were doing on the crowded dance floor. For those of you who remember Dick Clark and American Bandstand, enjoy this trip down memory lane. You younger folks, take a look at what your elders had to watch in order to see musician live, back in the day.

There have been some lovely tributes to Dick Clark in the comments below. Thank you so much for sharing your memories and your love for this wonderful show!

The 50s and 60s

I've lumped the two decades together because the show didn't debut until well into 1957, which means that there aren't many clips from the 50s. Dig these crazy fashions, though! How can you not love the transition from beehives and dresses to the far wilder late 60s? How adorable is Dick Clark, looking all of 19? There's a great clip of the show from a week when Aretha Franklin's Respect was the number one song, too!

The 70s

Technically, The Jam appeared on American Bandstand in 1980 but the song first hit the US charts in 1979 so I've included it in this set. You may have gotten the idea, from the videos below, that The Jacksons appeared frequently on the show. They did, but in part people simply upload more videos of their appearances, especially since Michael Jackson's death, because they were so popular and were so fun to watch.

It's Hard to Find American Bandstand Videos

But I'm Happy to Share What I've Found

American Bandstand VideosIt's taken me ages to collect these videos. The interviews with American Bandstand dancers and Dick Clark are readily available, but performances from the show often hide behind poor naming and tagging. I think I've watched ten videos for each one that I've included here. Some videos that include American Bandstand in the tag don't actually contain footage from the show and others show bands performing there but aren't labeled as such. I'll keep digging into the videos and post more as I find them. If you've got a favorite performance, please share it with me and I'll add it in the appropriate place. Thank you!

With eight CDs filled with music that appeared on the American Bandstand stages, this set captures a huge swath of American musical history. The recordings used remain the radio hits rather than later re-recordings and each offers a glimpse into the atmosphere of the era.

These interviews are with dancers who appeared on American Bandstand and, of course, with Dick Clark himself. They offer a glimpse into the eras during which the show was on the air. The TVLegends interview is half an hour long and is only part one of three, so if you want a thorough reminiscence, definitely try that video. You can also watch a fashion show of what dancers wore on American Bandstand over the decades (worn by people who were actually on the show in those years).

The Theme Song: Bandstand Boogie

Big Band Standard and Barry Manilow Hit

I couldn't find any videos including the synth and disco versions of the American Bandstand theme, Bandstand Boogie, but I did find a few great big band versions and a hysterical dance video using the Barry Manilow cover with the alternate lyrics that graced the show from 1977 through 1987, the years I remember best. I threw in the Ice Cream Truck video because it's so amazing, rather than because it has anything more than a tenuous connection to American Bandstand.

Did Dick Clark Rock Your Afternoons?

I remember doing some serious dancing with my siblings on Saturday afternoons, and being told many times by my mother to turn down the TV because the neighbors didn't want to hear whatever Dick Clark had to say about that week's hit songs. I still think that she was wrong, because I'm pretty sure our neighbors were watching American Bandstand, too.

How about you? Were you lucky enough to watch it every day, in the 50s or 60s? And let me say a big "thank you!" again to the folks who have shared their terrific stories here.

watched Bandstand every day from 1957-1961 and learned to dance from watching all the kids. Then came the Dick Clark show on Saturday nights--my dad made us watch it in the basement in the rec room because it was so loud. What wonderful years! Rip Dick Clark!

I remember watching Bandstand every afternoon in the mid-to-late 60s. And to think, I believed (at the time) that it was a new show. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

I actually contacted Dick Clark studios in Los Angeles and got a call back explaining they did not keep any of the tapings from American Bandstand. I have the same issue. A friend of mine was on in 1971 and was even on a spotlight dance but she never got to see it.
  • rosemarie kury May 5, 2012 @ 1:19 pm | delete
That's too bad if they didn't keep any of the tapings. It seemed to met that they had an anniversary one on many years ago with the kids that danced in the sixties, and some of them were there as adults. I wish they would at least release that on a DVD. I wouldn't be surprised though if some of the producers and such did save tapes and now that he's passed away maybe some will appear on EBAY or other places.
