American Flyer is a popular brand that designs and manufactures toy trains and railroad models in the United States. American Flyer trains were essentially manufactured in Chicago, Illinois. The American Flyer brand was popular, essentially in the mid twentieth century. American Flyer is best remembered for its S-gauge trains of the 1950s. American Flyer was initially an independent company that originated in the early half century. American Flyer Company is also known as the Chicago Flyer and was a budget brand. In the late 1930's, the American Flyer line was taken over and bought by the A.C. Gilbert, Co. of New Haven, Connecticut. A.C. Gilbert Co. was headed by A.C. Gilbert, who invented Erector sets and various such toys. A.C, Gilbert Co. was then acquired by the Wrather Corporation in the early sixties. American Flyer is now a registered trademark of Lionel Trains Inc.
