An American Girl

We love traveling to Chicago especially around Christmas. We stumbled upon the American Girl Place. Our daughters were 5 and 3 at the time and although they enjoyed playing with dolls, this was doll collecting on a much different level.
This place was unreal.

There was a Doll Hair Salon, a cafe, Photo Studio and Theater.

At ages eleven and nine, they now own their own American Girl Dolls and thoroughly enjoyed the mystery and relationships in the movie, Kit Kittredge. This is a summer "must see" movie.

Happy Shopping!

American Girl Playthings!
Welcome to American Girl Playthings!
Meg and Johanna have been American Girl collectors for many years. Both of us enjoy sharing our collections with girls and collectors of all ages. Years ago Meg created her Guide to the 18 inch dolls. In February or 2006 Johanna created Playthings to house all of the other AG product line information. It seemed a natural fit for Meg's Guide and Playthings to combine. In August of 2006 we did that.
We want to thank all of our fellow collectors for their information and knowledge! Information for this site was painstakingly gathered and reviewed by collectors. Many a catalog was dug out from under a bed or in a closet so that research could be double and triple checked.
Complete Guide to American Girl Doll Collecting
Introduction
In 1986, Pleasant T. Rowland, a former educator and publisher of educational materials, founded Pleasant Company which is headquartered in Middleton, Wisconsin. Pleasant Company produced and marketed three 18-inch dolls dolls each of which was from a different period in American History. Each of them had an elaborate background story which were told in several professionally-written books. The three girls, Samantha, Kirsten and Molly had a number of historically accurate outfits and accessory sets which tied into and were depicted in the various stories. The American Girl Collection was originally exclusively available only through mail-order catalogs. Over the next several years, five more historical dolls and their stories were added for a total of eight girls spanning periods in U.S. history from 1764 to 1944. All of the accessory items were imaginative, well designed and of the highest quality. In the Fall of 1997, an online store (AmericanGirl.com) was launched. In 1998, Pleasant Company was acquired by Mattel, Inc., the world's leading toy company. Pleasant Rowland took a seat on the Mattel Board as an acting VP for two years, but today she is no longer associated with the company.

American Doll Trading Cards

AG Doll Collecting - Trading Cards
This page depicts and describes the various sets of American Girl trading cards which were produced by Pleasant Company beginning in 1994, including complete checklists. Up through 2007, there are a total of about 918 different cards featuring all twelve American Girls. The different trading card packages, albums and boxed sets are also shown and described on this page.

The rows of card icons above link to the trading card pages of the twelve American Girls. The girls' names along the left side of the table shown below also link to their individual card pages.

The Ebay logo below links to an Ebay search for American Girl Trading Cards, Packs, Albums and Boxed Sets. These often sometimes come up for auction, but certain series are rarer and more expensive than others. Kit's 2001 set of cards #31-60, and Samantha and Addy's 1998 series are much harder to come by than any of the 1994 or 2002 card series and therefore at auction they typically fetch a higher cost.
