Molly - An American Girl Doll

Molly McIntire was my first American Girl doll.

I have been making American Girl clothes for a number of years, but I had an Our Generation doll to use as a model. For Valentine's Day 2006, my husband got me my very first real American Girl doll - and it was Molly. Molly is the World War II era girl, dealing with having her father away fighting the war (he is a doctor), and dealing with the rationing and other stresses of being on the homefront when a loved one is off at war, and your mother is off working a job for the first time ever.

The picture is of my Molly doll as displayed in my house, along with her best friend Emily Bennett who is a refugee from England. I purchased Emily for myself as a birthday present. Molly is one of four historical dolls that have a best friend doll.

In May 2006, my husband and I went to Chicago for our anniversary, and got to spend an hour at the American Girl Place there - it is the most AMAZING experience, and anyone with a daughter who loves American Girl dolls should make an effort to visit one of the stores. I bought myself a Bitty Baby doll as well as several of Molly's accessories. Fortunately for those of us who don't have one close by, there is always the internet.

She is one of the three original American Girl historical dolls, along with Kirsten and Samantha.

Why is Molly my favorite of the historical American Girl dolls?

She is my favorite for two reasons. First, she looks a lot like me with long dark hair and glasses, although I don't wear mine in braids. Second, she represents the WWII era, which is one of the periods of American History that I find the most fascinating. In addition to the doll, her best friend doll, and several outfits, I also have several of the Molly story books.

They even made a Molly Movie - and it was incredibly well done!

As you may know, Molly was created as a character in a series of books. Turning the books about Molly into a television movie started with rewriting her stories into a script. Molly's personality and looks came from the books, as did those of most other characters. Some changes were made to the stories and characters for the movie, but the heart of Molly's story remains the same-it's about life on the home front during World War Two, when the changes brought by war affected everyone, even a nine-year-old girl living in Illinois.
