The Famous House In the Background
The white house with the gothic window shown behind the couple has become quite famous as a result of this painting. The American Gothic House, or The Dibble house, was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. The Dibbles were the original owners of the house, but the owners in 1930 (when the painting was done) were Gideon and Mary Hart Jones.

Is there anyone who has not seen the sturdy Iowa farmer with his pitchfork and his thin-lipped wife or daughter? Ever since it met the public eye in 1930, the work titled American Gothic has elicited admiration, disgust, reverence, and ridicule-and has been reproduced hundreds of thousands of times, in every medium. Painted by a self-proclaimed "bohemian" who studied in Paris, the image was first seen as a critique of Midwestern Puritanism and what H. L. Mencken called "the booboisie." During the Depression, it came to represent endurance in hard times through the quintessential American values of thrift, work, and faith. Later, in television, advertising, politics, and popular culture, American Gothic evolved into parody-all the while remaining a lodestar by which one might measure closeness to or distance from the American heartland.

The People
The house in the background belonged to Gideon and Mary Hart Jones, but that is not them you see in the painting. Grant Wood instead decided to paint, in his words, "the kind of people I fancied should live in that house." And he didn't have to go far to find just the right people. The woman in the picture is Grant's sister Nan Wood-Graham (1900-1990), and the man is Dr. Byron McKeeby (1867-1950), Grant's dentist. His sister, Nan, felt embarrassed that she was depicted as the wife of someone old enough to be her father, and so she began telling people that the painting was that of a man and his daughter.
Seen here is a photo of Nan Wood-Graham and Dr. Byron McKeeby later standing alongside the painting they are depicted in.

A group of yuppies charter a plane for a camping getaway, only to find themselves making an emergency landing on an isolated island. They are taken in for the night by the only inhabitants, the rapidly-religious "Ma & Pa", who seem trapped in a Rockwellian time-warp. This proves to be every bit as unpleasant as it seems.

- Missing 'Canadian Gothic', from an old Molson Canadian advert. The Lady was in a Toronto Maple Leafs jersey and the Man in a Montreal Canadians jersey, holding a hockey stick instead of a pitchfork.
