Chicken Soup for American Idol Soul
So you wanna be an American Idol?
So how does one increase his or her chances of the big time?
Patrick Lynn, senior producer for "American Idol," said too many people make the same mistakes. First, they think it's just about the singing. It's not. It's also about personality and, like it or not, looks. Second, it's about originality.
The judges want originals. They don't want copycats, and, Lynn said, many people make the mistake of mimicking others.
"Be original," he said. "Don't try to give us something we've already had. That's one of the most important things. That and personality."
Lynn said he was shocked at how many step up to sing and won't even look at the judges. Some even put their hands in their pockets and display as much pizzazz as a day-old balloon. If you can sing like the next Mariah Carey but have the personality of a rock, chances are good to excellent you won't make it, he said.
Lynn offered tips for those wanting to shine and make it to the third round - the one in which the famous Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson are judging.
Anyone wanting to audition should go to www.americanidol.com, click on auditions and then FAQs, Rules, and Release Form.
The order of important qualities is voice, personality, and then looks.
People need to have stamina and staying power, not letting the drama of life get to them.
A lot of people who think they're good get passed up at this stage.
Lots of times someone will sing well in front of the judges, but singing well just isn't enough. You have to have personality.
You might sound good at church on Sunday, but "American Idol" is a television medium, not a live medium.
If you don't succeed, try again. Jordin Sparks, the current American Idol, tried out first in Los Angeles and didn't make it. When she auditioned in Seattle, this was the beginning of her ride to fame. "It can be done," Lynn said, of the old if-at-first-you-don't-succeed philosophy.
It's better to be a so-so singer (in the early auditions) and have a great personality and stage presence, if getting on TV is one's goal.
Be prepared to wait in very long lines. "Jordin and Taylor and Kelly waited in those lines and you're going to wait in them, too," Lynn said.
Dress comfortably for the first round.

For those who don't care about being the next "American Idol," but just want to get on TV, gimmicks and wacky costumes might work. Otherwise, it's best to stick with perfecting one's voice, stage presence, originality and personality.
Third time's a charm?
Dusty Dills, of Franklin, isn't sure what happened in his case, but he's not giving up. He's only 19 years old and has been singing in church for the past four years. He's tried out twice already - once in Birmingham, Ala., and again in Memphis, Tenn.
He said he waited in an auditorium packed with about 15,000 people, and even though he registered a day-and-a-half early, he wasn't called to audition until 4:45 in the afternoon.
"I got to watch everybody else," he said. "There were a lot of good people."
Advice from Dills: "Try not to be nervous. But don't hold back. I held back a whole lot because I was real nervous."
Be the next Idol
This could be the closest - geographically - one may get for a while.

Veteran Idol voice coach offers 12 tips:
Always know you're being watched at all times.
Make sure you know your song and at least two more.
Every time you sing, sing on pitch.
Remember to bring rain gear and something to sit on.
If you aren't picked, it's not the end of the world.
Come knowing you are NOT going to get any sleep.
Attitude is everything.
Never go without having a hotel registration or place to stay.
It's all worth it in the end because of the experience.
Don't wait to use the bathroom because you can't leave the line.
Obviously, you know they are going to pick some losers.
Leave knowing you did your best and keep singing.

More tips can be found on the Web site above, but it's important to find a song that shows off one's full range without going beyond it. Try a fresh approach to a killer song. Another good idea is to practice in front of the mirror and an audience.

American Idol - All's Fair in Love, War and Idol
All's Fair in Love, War and American Idol.Voted Off American IdolAnother week has past with another causality of the Sanjaya Malakar Effect. On April 11, 2007 Haley Scarnato the eye candy one with the legs was voted off american idol. Her performance on the Latin Theme night was not horrendous, her legs looked great and she appeared to be having fun. She made the performance "her own" and received positive attention. Like Sanjaya and his Hair, it was Haley and her legs.
The Hair won, in the twisted topsy turvy Idol season. Under what normal circumstances does Hair trump Legs? Rock beats Scissors, Paper covers Rock, Scissors cut Paper, but Legs Beat Hair! However this is not the case in the American Idol Season six show when you introduce the Sanjaya Effect. His supporters come out in droves to dial for the worst. His fans are convinced he has talent. They think he is cute. So for some reason in this biazzro world of Idol 6 all normal physics, laws of attraction, and common sense are thrown out the window.
Yes another week of Sanjaya Malakar. He has now ascended into the top 7 with a Country Music theme scheduled for April 17, 2007 (4-17-07). During the Latin week Sanjaya Malakar grew a flimsy mustache and goatee and sang his song in Spanish. Will this country week, see a Broke Back Mountain version of Sanjaya? Can we expect at bare minimum a Cowboy Hat and boots? A Red Flannel shirt and maybe some tobacco dip cups to tie in the theme?
The road is narrowing and each week one Idol will be voted off.
Like a train wreck and an accident waiting to happen, our eyes will be fixed on Fox's American Idol on April 17, 2007 (4-17-07) for the performances and then on April 18, 2007 (4-18-07) to see if Sanjaya made it another week.
The Idol Top 7 Are:
