The American Pie Movies
The Fine American Franchise that is American Pie
The American Pie movies are quite possibly my favourite teen films of all time. The first three movies are absolutely excellent and over the years I've watched them all on many an occasion. Right from the very first time I watched the original 'American Pie' the series had me hooked: I love the movie, it's possibly the best of the three and all of the main characters I absolutely adore. The characters are so well put across, Stifler was always my favourite but all of them are just absolutely excellent. A lot of time clearly went into choosing the characters for the original American Pie movie; they're all excellent and in direct contrast to one another are those of Jim and Stifler. Whilst Jim is the straight one of the group, Stifler is the pure comedy guy and it is this supreme contrast in character types which provides for many of the films major laughs. The following is the original gang of friends (complete with their female interests):
- Jim Levenstein (Jason Biggs)
- Chris 'Oz' Ostreicher (Chris Klein)
- Kevin Myers (Thomas Ian Nicholas)
- Paul Finch (Eddie Kaye Thomas)
- Steven Stifler (Sean William Scott)
- Nadia (Shannon Elizabeth)
- Michelle Flaherty (Alyson Hannigan)
- Vicky Lathum (Tara Reid)
- Heather (Mena Suvari)
- Stifler's Mom (Jennifer Coolidge)
Jim, Oz, Kevin and Finch are the main group of friends; Stifler is the guy that they all hang around with from time to time as he has a lot of parties, they don't particularly like him however and merely tolerate him for the perks of his having a rich family. The main group of four in the first film agree on pact; they're in their last year of high-school and all agree that by graduation they'll had had sex. It is here that they all quite unsuccessfully set about finding partners, dates for the prom, and partners to bed at Stifler's graduation partner.
Jim has an interest in Nadia, he does however blow it (twice); ultimately he ends up with band camp girl Michelle, it's Nadia that he really likes however and she becomes "the one that got away". Kevin has a steady girlfriend in the form of Vicky, the big test for him now however is to sleep with her; all his friends are egging him on to do so, and feeling the pressure from his friends he starts to make moves forward in order to try to sleep with his partner before they graduate. Oz starts attending choir practise in an attempt to attract the interest of Heather; Finch however plays it call and chases after no-one; Finch ultimately ends up sleeping with Stifler's Mom, much to the disgust and annoyance of Stifler.
The first film is all about leaving high-school, growing up, and coming of age. They're all off to different colleges across the country and this is the last time that they'll all be together as high-school seniors. It's their last full summer together and as such they're all looking to make the most of it. The first film is basically all about the four main teens sexual journey into adulthood; they're soon to be off to college, and they wish to make sure that they're all sexually experienced before they go.
The second film then follows on from their last summer together as high school seniors; they're now college freshers and once more it's the summer. They've got big plans to go on a beach holiday this summer, make the most of being together again by holidaying away at the sea. Not a lot has changed for the teenagers, it's basically just a continuation of the first film but this time in a different location. Jim has quite an issue however; Nadia is coming back to town, does he however now hold feelings for band geek Michelle? Will it be beauty or the geek as Jim now has to spend the summer thinking about which of them it is that he wants? I hate to spoil it for you here if you don't already know; but the third movie is called American Wedding (American Pie: The Wedding) and tells the story of the teenagers furthered maturity and Jim's marriage to Michelle. In the third and final film they're now beginning to grow up and all taking major steps in their lives; even Stifler is maturing. The first film is about coming of age and becoming 'men', with American Wedding is where they really become men however and the movie at which the five teen friends finally grow up and become adults.
The first three films are classics, later however came the not so impressive 'American Pie Presents' spin-off series and the following are all the American Pie films to have been released to date:
- American Pie (1999)
- American Pie 2 (2001)
- American Wedding (2003)
- American Pie Presents Band Camp (2005)
- American Pie Presents The Naked Mile (2006)
- American Pie Presents Beta House (2007)
It's the first three films in the series that are the very best; the true American Pie movies and the ones which demand to be watched the most. The 'Presents' series which followed is not so great; Beta House is a good movie, I've not seen The Naked Mile but it's meant to be similar to Beta House, and Band Camp is just a bit rubbish. The first three films are the only ones to feature the original group of friends; Jim's Dad (played by Eugene Levy) is the only character to appear in all six films, even he fails to save forth film Band Camp however.
To me American Pie will always be about the adventures of Jim, Oz, Kevin, Finch, and Stifler; there are of course a few other important characters in each of the first three films, these are the ones that I love the most however and the characters which I personally perceive to be the most important. They're all great characters and each of them are developed magnificently well throughout the first three American Pie feature films.
Paul Weitz/Chris Weitz directed the first film, James B. Rogers the second, and Jesse Dylan the third; full credit must surely go out to all of these directors for providing the three films of the fine teen comedy franchise that is American Pie. If you've never before seen the American Pie movies then my best advice is to invest in the American Pie Triple Boxset which features the first three films in the series; it's an absolutely excellent original trilogy and one that all should watch and in fact own.
The following are my thoughts on all of the American Pie movies to have been released to date:

American Pie (Unrated Widescreen Collector's Edition)
Amazon Price: $5.43 (as of 05/27/2012)![]()
The original and also very possibly the best; American Pie is the movie that kicked it all off way back in 1999. I love the first film, and along with the second and third American Pie's have now watched this one many a time. There was a time when I'd watch an American Pie movie each night; watch this one on the first night, the second film the next, then American Wedding after that; as soon as I'd reached the third film I'd then repeat the process (that's how much I love the American Pie movies!).
The American Pie teens are into their last year of high school and coming up to graduation; all are still virgins and make a pact to lose their virginity by the time that they graduate. Will they manage it though? Will the pact work and will they all proudly have had sex by the time that graduation rolls around? Watch the film and you'll find out in terrifically funny fashion.
At $9.49 I feel that this film is an absolute steal; a complete bargain and well worth investing in. It's a hugely humorous film, and if you like a good bit of teen comedy then you can't go far wrong with American Pie. The pie scene is one that I'll never forget as long as I live; it's a terrific film is American Pie and as I say; this is one film that is well worth investing in.

American Pie 2 Review
American Pie 2 (Unrated Widescreen Collector's Edition)
Amazon Price: $2.47 (as of 05/27/2012)![]()
When it came to the second American Pie film I felt that they couldn't possibly again produce anywhere near the quality of the first; I was proved well and truly wrong when I saw American Pie 2 for the first time however as once more this is an absolutely magnificent teen comedy movie. Is it better than the first film? I'm not too sure, probably not; I love them both however and which is the better of the two just doesn't really matter, the fact is that they're both excellent films and both well worth watching (so too is American Wedding actually, and Beta House for that matter).
They've now progressed from high school and are freshmen in college; not much has changed for them however and they're still desperate to have sex and eager to please the ladies. Jim is still as inexperienced as ever, and all of the gang are in fact really pretty rubbish when it comes to seducing the ladies. Finch has of course had sex with Stifler's mom, much to the disgust of Stifler; all the others are equally inept when it comes to wooing the women however and even though they're college students now; they're just as inexperienced as ever.
American Pie 2 is a great movie and again I'd definitely recommend investing in it. $7.99? You can't really go wrong at that sort of price; another absolute bargain of a film and surely one to add to your collection. The American Pie movies demand to be owned as you're bound to want to watch them time and time again.
American Pie: The Wedding
American Wedding Review
American Wedding - Unrated (Widescreen Collector's Edition)
Amazon Price: $2.00 (as of 05/27/2012)![]()
American Wedding is the third American Pie film; the final film in the trilogy and the last of the 'true' American Pie movies. Three films have since followed, this was the last film with the original cast however and the last of the true great American Pie movies. I love American Wedding; I actually went to see it a full three times at the cinema when it came out, and as soon as it came out on DVD I was out there to buy it. I'm a huge fan of all the first three American Pie films, what made this one so special for me though? I don't really know, what I can tell you however is that American Wedding is one of my absolute favourite films of all time.
Jim and his band camp girlfriend Michelle are going to get married. All is going well and good, their engagement party is coming along nicely, and then the horrible happens; Stifler arrives and crashes the party. Stifler has not been told about the wedding, he's been nothing but trouble ever since they've known him and it had been the plan not to have him at the wedding. He's found out about it now however and there's no way that Stifler's going to miss out on this one.
If you've seen the movie I'm sure you'll share my enthusiasm. There are some horrible scenes, such as that involving the "truffle", it's all incredibly funny however and American Wedding is I feel a truly exceptional movie. This is most definitely a movie that I'd recommend viewing 100%. The Stifler character goes a bit strange here, I actually quite like it however and as weird as he is; really quite warm to the new Stifler that we find here. They're all growing up, they're all getting on with their lives, and even Stifler is changing for the better; it's a great film, a real coming of age tale and a movie which all should own.
American Pie: The Wedding Trailer
American Pie Presents Band Camp
American Pie: Band Camp (Unrated Widescreen Edition)
Amazon Price: $1.73 (as of 05/27/2012)![]()
After the first three fantastic films in the American Pie series; then came 'American Pie Presents Band Camp'; the runt of the litter if you will. Having loved the first three American Pie movies I just had to see this one. I bought it on DVD as soon as I found out about it, and eagerly put it into the player hoping to be impressed. What I felt as I watched this movie for the first time certainly wasn't what I had expected; rather than feeling impressed, the movie merely made me feel a little depressed.
Stifler's brother is a bit of a naughty boy, and as he's such a naughty boy he's sent off to band camp for the summer. Some summer he's going to have; sent away to boring band camp for the summer... but it's then that he quite a revelation. Whilst at band camp he'll make a movie about 'Bandies Gone Wild'; the sexual exploits of those that go to band camp. He spends thousands of dollars on camera equipment and sets off to band camp with the ultimate goal of creating a 'hot' bandies movie.
Now the first flaw came in this film in Stifler's spending of thousands of dollars. He's only a teenager, a high-school student, doesn't seem particularly well off to me; and yet there he goes and spends tens of thousands of dollars on camera equipment that he doesn't actually know how to use. How did he come into such money I wonder? Why does he think so little of spending so much money? Well, that's never actually explained and is merely the first flaw of many. With teen comedy movies the emphasis is meant to be on the comedy; never is 'American Pie Presents Band Camp' ever particularly comedic. It made me slightly chuckle a few times, nothing too major however and on the whole I was really just a little bored when watching this film.
Having owned the DVD for a number of years now I've only ever watched it twice; one when I first bought it, and again with my partner more recently to show her what became of the American Pie series after the first three films. It's not one of the worst movies I've ever seen or anything like that; compared to the first three Pie films it is however a huge disappointment. The first three American Pie films offer so much, Band Camp on the other hand isn't even in the same league.
American Pie Presents The Naked Mile
American Pie - The Naked Mile (Unrated Widescreen Edition)
Amazon Price: $4.23 (as of 05/27/2012)![]()
To date; American Pie Presents The Naked Male is the only one of the six American Pie movies that I have not yet seen. I've heard good things about it, heard that it's quite similar to the sixth film in its style and tone, still not had the pleasure of seeing it for myself however and for that very reason I can't personally make a recommendation on this one.
If what I've been told is to be believed however then American Pie Presents The Naked Male is a very good movie indeed; Beta House is very good, and given that Beta House is based on movie characters that this film created; the signs most certainly look supremely good. Watch the trailer below; it pleased me, and if you're a fan of the other American Pie movies in the series then I'm sure that it'll bring a smile to your face too.

American Pie Presents Beta House
American Pie Presents Beta House Review
American Pie Presents: Beta House
Amazon Price: $3.95 (as of 05/27/2012)![]()
Having vowed to never again watch another American Pie movie after Band Camp; in 2008 I found myself watching 'American Pie Presents Beta House'. My partner and I having subscribed to film rental service LoveFilm; Beta House was one of our chosen movies and we decided to give this one a go. After a poor start my partner didn't seem too enthused to continue watching, and as such the DVD was played on my laptop instead whilst my partner gave glancing looks across at the film from across the room. I enjoyed it, and my partner said afterwards that it looked pretty good from where she was sitting too.
Beta House tells the story of Erik Stifler and his journey off to college. His cousin Dwight is the big man on campus; one of the most popular guys present there and someone that many there look up to. He's a part of the Beta fraternity; the coolest fraternity on the campus. Epsilon Sigma Kappa is the rival fraternity; commonly known by Beta as the GEEKs. The film tells the story of these two fraternities and their battle in the Greek Games; a dangerous sporting event which has long since been banned at the college. The students decide that reviving this event however is a great way of once and for all proving which fraternity is best and so the games begin.
It's a very funny film, doesn't start off too great but as it gets going the quality most definitely begins to pick up here. 'American Pie Presents Beta House' made me laugh a lot, it's still not as good as the first three films I don't think but a pretty decent quality comedy film nonetheless. For fans of the first three films in the series then it's definitely well worth watching, these are not quite the characters of the first three films but still a decent bunch of guys nonetheless. They're funny, the film will make you laugh, and it's just a really rather good teen comedy movie which is without doubt well worth owning.
