The Day the Music Died, Don McLean Threw Papers

Folk singer/songwriter Don McLean wrote American Pie, ostensibly about the plan crash that killed some of the most popular and promising musicians of the day in 1959. The song is a tribute to Buddy Holly and a lamentation of the decline of rock and roll since he, The Big Bopper, and Ritchie Valens were killed. The song was a major American hit in 1972 and has been a part of the country's soundscape ever since.

While McLean has never offered his take on the lyrics for American Pie, you can read dozens of them form the ensuing thirty-five years. Check this line-by-line interpretation at history-of-rock.com and this article suggests that American Pie is the greatest pop song ever and explores it both lyrically and musically. Apparently, Don McLean had a paper route in 1959, and learned of Buddy Holly's, Ritchie Valens's, and The Big Bopper's deaths while preparing the February 4th papers for delivery.

Don McLean's original version of American Pie struck a chord in music fans across generations and led people to think more deeply about the influence rock and roll has on American society. While the song has been covered dozens of times, McLean remains the gold standard by which those versions are judged, and rightly so. He interprets his own poetry with emotion and zeal, with classic rock sensibilities and a folk sound.

The Lyrics for American Pie

The Epic Poem Mourning Rock and Roll and Loss

A long, long time ago, I can still remember
How that music used to make me smile.
And I knew if I had my chance
That I could make those people dance
And maybe they'd be happy for a while.

But February made me shiver
With every paper I'd deliver.
Bad news on the doorstep;
I couldn't take one more step.

I can't remember if I cried
When I read about his widowed bride,
But something touched me deep inside
The day the music died.

I started singin',
CHORUS

Now for ten years we've been on our own
And moss grows fat on a rolling stone,
But that's not how it used to be.
When the jester sang for the king and queen,
In a coat he borrowed from James Dean
And a voice that came from you and me,

Oh, and while the king was looking down,
The jester stole his thorny crown.
The courtroom was adjourned;
No verdict was returned.
And while Lennon read a book of Marx,
The quartet practiced in the park,
And we sang dirges in the dark
The day the music died.

We started singing,
CHORUS

Oh, and there we were all in one place,
A generation lost in space
With no time left to start again.
So come on, jack, be nimble, jack be quick!
Jack Flash sat on a candlestick
'Cause fire is the devil's only friend.

Oh, and as I watched him on the stage
My hands were clenched in fists of rage.
No angel born in hell
Could break that satan's spell.
And as the flames climbed high into the night
To light the sacrificial rite
I saw satan laughing with delight
The day the music died

He was singing,
CHORUS

I met a girl who sang the blues
And I asked her for some happy news,
But she just smiled and turned away.
I went down to the sacred store
Where I'd heard the music years before,
But the man there said the music wouldn't play.

And in the streets the children screamed,
The lovers cried, and the poets dreamed.
But not a word was spoken;
The church bells all were broken.
And the three men I admire most:
The father, son, and the holy ghost,
They caught the last train for the coast
The day the music died.

And they were singing,
CHORUS

Repeat

American Pie Music Videos

From Don McLean to Madonna to the Brady Bunch

The "Punk Covers" video is actually the Catch-22 version of American Pie. I rather like the song, but the video is a static screen. Crank it up and leave your computer for a couple of minutes for that one. If you just can't get enough, run a search at YouTube for "American Pie Cover" and enjoy the hundreds of results featuring mostly amateur guitarists in their respective living rooms (although there are ukulele and piano covers thrown in to keep you guessing). Don't miss the King's Singers who do some really haunting harmony. I threw in Weird Al for a little light relief as Don McLean's original is a bit of a downer.

The Original, Don McLean Version

I'm only including a few verses and the chorus in an easy format, as the song is essentially repetitive. A web search will yield many variations of the full song, both the guitar tabs and sheet music.

Ah, one of my favorite songs. Just wish that you had listed the entire lyrics as some of my favorite lines aren't here. 5 stars and a pink carnation and a pick-up truck ;)

Very nice! I'm definitely going to check out more of your song lenses!

Excellent Lens! Isn't there a verse that has something like "The marching band refused to yield" (That is interpreted to be about the Beatles)
"I met a girl who sang the blues" is supposed to be about Janice Joplin. For those who make the connection, the song is really awesome!

I definitely love the original best. Great review of a great song.
I don't have any alternative interpretations to suggest, your references seem to have it fairly well covered.
