Key art movements within America have proved to be abstract expressionism, pop art and other forms of modern abstraction. As a relatively young country the United States has quickly gained itself the position of an artistic and political power house. Whilst early renaissance and baroque periods were dominated by continental European artists from Italy and Spain, with impressionists being a French-born success, America has not joined these countries as a key influence in new modern art styles that are added to in a seemingly constant stream.

Abstract expressionists like Motherwell and most notably Jackson Pollock chose to challenge accepted artistic academic traditions head on with their emotional, carefree approaches that included classic paintings like No. 5, Number 1, Lucifer and Convergence. Willem de Kooning is a Dutch American artist who also followed similar methodology.

Target and the American Flag by Jasper Johns are great examples of truly contemporary art, simple twists on existing themes with bold colours similar to the Pop artists of Lichtenstein and Warhol. Arshile Gorky produced Artist and his Mother which remains one his best known paintings from a career of predominantly abstract expressionist work. Jean-Michel Basquiat's Worthy Constituant is another excellent American abstract painting, and Basquiat was actually the first African American to achieve great international success as a painter. Convergence by Jackson Pollock is a similarly memorable work from another artist pushing the boundaries of what is considered art.
