From Homemade American Prepared Sandwich to Submachine Gun Sandwich

My favorite type of meal for lunch is a homemade American prepared sandwich. Oh no... I'm not a cannibal! American prepared fillet is a is a tasteful Belgian delicacy that you can spread on your sandwiches. Basically, American prepared sandwich is a delicacy inspired by Tartar steak and turned it into a Belgian recipe spread on bread.

When you're in a Belgian snack bar, restaurant, brasserie or other place you can eat, if you order an "American", it means that you order raw "minced beef". The same goes for "American fillet" or "American prepared": both expressions mean that you will receive raw seasoned minced beef.

Many sandwiches in Belgium have been given American related names. In this page, you're going to learn how to make homemade American prepared sandwiches, submachine gun sandwiches, Dagobert sandwiches and even Belgian hot dogs!

Origins of American Sandwich Recipes

Belgians enjoy eating raw food and, more particularly, American fillet!

Do Belgians really eat Americans and are they Cannibals??? Hm... this is a question I've seen on the Internet and I think that because people have joked about it so much, time has come to provide an answer to it! Indeed, Belgians do enjoy eating American fillet and American "prepare" and love it with a passion! However, they aren't Cannibals.

Where does the name "seasoned American" come from?

This is an excellent question! As a matter of fact, nobody knows where the names "American fillet" or "American prepared" originate from. My grandmother always told me that they were some of the memories that American soldiers left in our country after the end of WWII. However, I ran a search on the Web and didn't find any evidence of such a fact. Instead, I found a story that seasoned American fillet could be the creation of the chef Joseph Niels.

In the beginning, American fillet and prepare, were made out of horse meat; however, very quickly, chefs made a decision on using beefsteak to prepare such a recipe. Nowadays, nobody uses horse meat in this preparation any more.

What is American Fillet?

American fillet is made out of raw minced beefsteak and seasoned with salt and pepper, period. No cooking needed, quick and easy to prepare; just eat American fillet as it is.

What is American "prepare"?

American prepare or seasoned American fillet is also raw minced beefsteak. However, it is seasoned with more ingredients such as mayonnaise, capers, pickles, onions, etc. There is even a hot version, named Martino.

Belgians use American prepared both as sandwich spread and as a stand alone meal served with fries and salad. The best kind of drink to serve with such a meal is beer. Let's take a look at the American prepare recipe...

Wanna Prepare a Dagobert American Sandwich Instead?

Improve your seasoned American fillet experience

dagobert sandwich

In many European countries, sandwiches are kept simple: two slices bread or a baguette which would include ham, cheese, pate, roast beef, minced beef, tuna or something else; that's it. However, after WWII, we were left with a few ways to improve our sandwiches. This allowed us to create larger collections of sandwiches such as Dagobert sandwiches; which are delightful Belgian specialties.

A Dagobert sandwich consists of an average sandwich to which we add mayonnaise, sliced hard boiled eggs, grated carrots and cabbage, lettuce, sliced tomatoes, cucumber, onions, or whatever we best like.

From the end of the Roman rule to our Independance, Belgian provinces have all been under different rules - not the same from one province to another - for many centuries. How About a Mitraillette Sandwich, Another Popular Belgian Recipe?

Give our submachine gun sandwich a try!

mitraillette sandwich

Another great sandwich inspired by American sandwiches is the Mitraillette (also known as American sandwich in France). Here's how to make a Mitraillette (submachine gun). Ingredients:

  • 1/2 crispy French baguette
  • Fried meat such as a burger, pita meat, sliced meatballs, etc.
  • Fries
  • Sauce such as mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, etc.

Directions to prepare a Mitraillette sandwich:

  1. Open the 1/2 baguette (leave 1 of the longest sides uncut)
  2. Add a coat of fried meat
  3. Another coat of fries
  4. Add a sauce such as mayonnaise, Aioli, ketchup, or whatever sauce you best like

That's it!

If you wish, you can also add a few crudites such as grated carrot, lettuce, sliced tomatoes, etc. Bon appetit!

Hot Dogs and Hamburger Sandwiches Made in Belgium

Learn how Belgians do prepare Hot Dogs and other burgers

hot dog with mustard

Belgians are crazy about Hot Dog sandwiches on which they jump when they attend an outside event such as fairs, rummage sales, market days, outdoor concerts, etc. However, Hot Dog sandwiches prepared the Belgian way differ from those sandwiches prepared by Americans.

Here are the ingredients you need to prepare a Hot Dog sandwich made in Belgium:

  • 1/2 crusty French baguette or piccolo bread,
  • Hot Frankfurter sausage,
  • Hot sauerkraut
  • Mustard

Indeed, this differs slightly from cheese and ketchup Hot Dogs. Give this sandwich a try and you'll never eat anything else.

On market days, we also find delicious hamburgers prepared with fried ground beef, sauteed onions and mustard; these ingredients are placed in crispy buns (also known as... "guns" --> pistolets).

As you can see, we particularly like mayonnaise and mustard as seasonings. And as a fun note, Belgians often provided their specialties with weapon names; it's our way to use weapons with peaceful intentions :)

How interesting that these sandwiches are called "American" - I've never seen such a sandwich in my life (born & raised in California)! In fact, I don't know anyone personally that would eat a sandwich made out of raw beef : )

    True story:

I love my meat very bloody. I don't eat it that way because I tend to eat Kosher meat, but I like it *very* bloody. I went into a Lone Star (restaurant) and ordered a steak extra rare. They brought it out medium rare. I sent it back. They brought it medium rare. I sent it back and said not to let it even touch the grill. Then I made the cook stand there while I ate the thing. Really. I can be mean like that when it comes to my food. Obviously I didn't eat Kosher at the time lol

I like raw meat. I prefer beef to have a sear on it but be raw inside (than eating it raw). I do like both Tuna and Salmon raw as well.
