American Southwest Scenes

Remember the opening sequence of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade with River Phoenix as young Indy? All of those iconic American Southwest scenes exist in Arches National Park. What I love about Arches, and the Southwest in general, is how foreign much of the terrain looks compared to the green rolling mountains to which I'm accustomed. The light is severe, the rock formations alien, and you can often see the horizon and largely uninterrupted sky.

Sandstone arches, chunks of basalt, layers of different colored rocks, pale grasses, petrified wood: I find it all fascinating. Explore the beautiful, unusual region with the photography and artwork featured in this lens.

Arches National Park

It was a hot August day in Arches National Park near Moab, Utah. The sun was blazing, but there were fewer people to contend with because of the heat. Still it was an exercise in patience to make some of my photographs free of people. Double Arch actually has a tiny guy in it, just emerging from one of the arches shadows. I remember thinking, "If everyone would just wear neutral colors, they'd blend in!"

Petrified Forest National Park

When I was looking for something to do between Moriarty, New Mexico and Las Vegas, Nevada about 3 weeks into what would become a 7 month long cross country road trip, my brother suggested Petrified Forest National Park near Holbrook, Arizona. The park was absolutely amazing. I would love to go back and spend more time there.
