The American Foxhound is a very social animal. It loves being with its family and is a very kind and loyal dog. To remain happy it needs plenty of attention, exercise and careful training. If it does not get enough attention or exercise it may get bored which can lead to destructive behaviour. Exercising the breed usually consists of long walks followed by a game of fetch.
Being a very social hound it is a pleasure to live with and will thrives in a family environment. They are especially good with small children. The American Foxhound is best suited for a life with plenty of access to outdoor activity and thus should not be kept in an apartment. It also should not be left alone for extended periods of time.
The American Foxhound is a very intelligent dog. The can learn to open doors and scale small fences. Bred for hunting by scent, once picked up, they will follow it disregarding any commands from its owner.
These dogs are not the easiest to train. They are independent by nature and most will only follow commands if it suits them. Thus training them can be a trying experience. They also do not respond well to negative reinforcement and should be trained with an incentive, like a ball or food, in mind.
It is a fairly healthy breed which does not generally carry any genetic disorders. Allthough one should be careful not to overfeed as it can easily gain weight. They normally have a lifespan of about 10 to 13 years.
