'American Gangster' is the story of a suave, smart, and charismatic man named Frank Lucas (Denzel Washington), who took over the Harlem drug trade in the 1970s. He inherits it from his boss, Bumpy Johnson, who trusts Frank more than anyone else, and Frank learns a lot from Bumpy.

Washington portrays Frank Lucas, a real-life heroin kingpin from Harlem who smuggled the drug into the country in American service planes returning from the Vietnam War. Crowe portrays Richie Roberts, a detective who brings down Lucas' drug empire.Filming was done on location in New York City. American Gangster was released in the United States and Canada on November 2, 2007.
Casting
Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe both met the real-life figures that they portrayed for American Gangster to capture their voices and mannerisms.
Scott chose to direct American Gangster based on the paradoxical values of Frank Lucas and Richie Roberts. The film focuses a bit on the comparatively ethical business practices of the "wicked gangster" and the womanizing and failed marriage of the "do-gooder" police detective. Washington, who was not normally a fan of gangster films, chose to portray Lucas when he saw "the arc of the character" had ended with prices that Lucas paid for his actions. Crowe was drawn to the project based on his previous work with the director on Gladiator.
Production was slated in summer 2006. To prepare for their roles, the actors met their real-life counterparts. Washington acquired Lucas's Southern accent, and Crowe practiced to match Roberts's manner of speaking and body language, requesting tape recordings of Roberts to assist in his preparation. The following March, the studio rehired Zaillian to rewrite the script for American Gangster.

- Two of the very best - and I mean the very best - actors in our current crop of movie actors - crackle with energy and fire in American Gangster. In a role he seems born to play, Denzel Washington shows his highly crafted devilish bad-boy persona in a contest for the soul of New York with an unlikely archangel in Russell Crowe, fresh from playing the bad boy himself in this year's 3:10 to Yuma.
- Gangster Movie Review
- This beautiful/violent crime drama has plenty of talent behind the camera in director Ridley Scott, but the film's key player is Denzel Washington. It's a performance to behold, as he's front and center in this nearly three-hour...
- American Gangster | Movie Review | Entertainment Weekly
- As Frank Lucas, the brutal Harlem drug lord of American Gangster, Denzel Washington has a gaze as steady as a statue's, and he wanders through the vibrantly messy, pre-Giuliani-time streets in an overcoat that accentuates his wide shoulders and coiled, urban-king swagger. There's no doubt that Frank communicates strength - in fact, he communicates little else. Washington might be playing a senator, or Malcolm X all over again; his performance is smooth, confident, and more than a little familiar. Even as a gangster, he doesn't transform - he doesn't release his inner thug. He's still every inch Denzel, all dour nobility.
- Review: American Gangster
- American Gangster is compelling in the same way that many mob-related motion pictures are compelling, but it fails to achieve the greatness that the best of them attain. The problem with American Gangster may be that it tries to hard to provide balance between the protagonist and the antagonist but never really achieves it. While the story is rarely dull and there's plenty of material to fill up the more than 2 1/2 hour running time, there's an overall absence of dramatic tension. Ridley Scott rarely creates an uninteresting motion picture, and this is no exception, but American Gangster will not go down as one of the respected director's best efforts.

- 'American Gangster' is all business in tale of Harlem drug lord.
Review By Wesley Morris Boston Globe Published: 11/02/2007
"American Gangster," you'll notice, is not called "American Gangsta." The director Ridley Scott and the screenwriter Steve Zaillian take us back to an era when a drug lord had some class. His jeans did not sag, because he didn't wear jeans. He did, however, wear chinchilla, lots of it. And as a show of community spirit, he gave back to the people. In this movie, we know this to be true since we see Denzel Washington throwing Thanksgiving turkeys from a big truck to the outstretched arms of Harlem masses. And what you think is, "Gosh, I hope nobody gets hurt."
But the man Washington plays, Frank Lucas, doesn't want to hurt anybody - unless he's just set you on fire then shot you or has bashed your head into a piano. Or unless he or his associates have sold you heroin. Right. How could I forget that?
