American Idol is an annual American televised singing competition, which began its first season on June 11, 2002. Part of the Idol franchise, it originated from the British reality program Pop Idol created by British entertainment executive Simon Fuller.

The program seeks to discover the best young singer in the country, through a series of nationwide auditions. The outcomes of the later stages of this competition are determined by public voting by phone.

The format features three judges who critique the contestants' performances in order to facilitate the voting: record producer and bass player Randy Jackson; former pop star and choreographer Paula Abdul; and music executive Simon Cowell. The show is hosted by former children's game show emcee and television personality Ryan Seacrest; comedian Brian Dunkleman cohosted with Seacrest in season one. The American Idol band is led by Rickey Minor.

The show usually airs on Tuesday and Wednesday nights in the US and Thursday and Friday nights in the UK (two days after the US airing). In its six seasons, its six winners have been, in order of their season, Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, Fantasia Barrino, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Hicks, and Jordin Sparks . The first five American Idols are from the Southern United States of America (U.S) and the sixth, Jordin Sparks, is from the Southwest. Hicks was the oldest winner at 29, Sparks the youngest at just 17.

American Idol is televised on Fox in the United States, ITV2 in the UK, FOX8 in Australia, CTV in Canada and on Q11 for the 7th season, in the Philippines. The Idol series was first created by Simon Fuller (manager of the Spice Girls and S Club 7). The director is Bruce Gowers (director of Queen's original "Bohemian Rhapsody" video) and executive producers are Nigel Lythgoe (a judge on So You Think You Can Dance) and Ken Warwick (Gladiators and Grudge Match). With the exception of the Super Bowl and the Academy Awards, American Idol is the highest rated(viewed) program on U.S. national television

Amanda Overmyer
(born October 26, 1984 in Mulberry, Indiana), while her father served there in the United States Air Force. Eventually, the Overmyer family made their way back to their home state of Indiana, where Amanda resides today. The Harley-riding nurse was the original singer for a local hard-rock band called Steeleto prior to auditioning in Atlanta.

Brooke White
is a 24-year-old nanny from Mesa, Arizona who auditioned in Philadelphia. During her audition, she admitted to never having seen a R-rated movie due to having strict parents, prompting Cowell to state that the show will "bring her over to the dark side." In 2005, she released an album titled Songs From the Attic under New Millenium Records.

Carly Smithson
(born September 26, 1983 in Dublin, Ireland) is a 24-year-old professional singer and tattoo parlor owner from San Diego, California. Carly previously signed a recording contract with major USA label MCA records and released an album in 2002 under the name Carly Hennessy. The CD sold approximately 300 copies. Carly was also a contentant in season 5, but was dropped from the show due to a problem with her visa.

Chikezie Eze
known simply as Chikezie (born September 11, 1985) auditioned for the show's sixth season, and made into the Hollywood Round, where he was cut before top 44.

David Archuleta
(born December 28, 1990 in Miami, Florida) is a 17-year-old from Murray, Utah who auditioned in San Diego. In 2003, at the age of 12, he sang on several episodes of the television show Star Search.On one episode, he sang against then 13-year-old Alexandréa Lushington, who was a fellow semi-finalist this season.

David Cook
born December 20, 1982 in Tulsa, Oklahoma) is a native of Blue Springs, Missouri.He enjoys doing crossword puzzles in his spare time and calls himself a "word nerd."

David Hernandez (Eliminated on 1st round final)
age 24, from Glendale, Arizona. He gave up his apartment to move to Hollywood. Until September 30, 2007, David worked as a male stripper named "Caden" at Big Dick's Strip Club in Phoenix, Arizona, performing fully nude and giving lap dances to male patrons.Despite previous contestants being removed from the show for similar 'questionable' pasts, Hernandez will be allowed to remain on the show.

Jason Castro
(born March 25, 1987) is a 20-year-old from Rockwall, Texas who auditioned in Dallas. The show was unable to air his audition of "Crazy" by Gnarls Barkley, which Nigel Lythgoe noted was "one of the best performances [the show] ever had," because one of the three rights-holders to the song declined clearance.In 2006, he appeared on Cheyenne Kimball's MTV reality TV series, as her real-life dating interest.Jason's family is originally from Colombia. He was the first person in his family to be born in the United States. He attended Texas A&M University as a Construction Science major before trying out for American Idol. He began growing his hair out for dreadlocks during his senior year of high school.

Kristy Lee Cook
(born January 14, 1984) is a 24-year-old horse trainer from Selma, Oregon who sold her prized horse in order to afford the trip to audition in Philadelphia. In 2001, she was signed to a major label, Arista Nashville.Cook also signed with Britney Spears' production company, and Spears herself was supposed to have a cameo in Cook's first video.At the time of signing, she was managed by the former manager of LeAnn Rimes.In 2005, she released a CD called Devoted with Ren-Hen Records.

Michael Johns
(born October 20, 1978 in Perth, Western Australia) is a 29-year-old, originally from Australia, who lives in Buckhead, Georgia and auditioned in San Diego. Prior to Idol, he joined the band The Film under the name Michael Lee and was scheduled to release an album in 2003 on Madonna's record label, Maverick Records.Johns abruptly left the band just prior to signing a record deal, and negotiated a solo management contract instead. He then created a new band, The Rising, who were then under contract with Madonna's Maverick Records label. Maverick dropped the band's contract before an album was released, but The Rising released the album independently. After moving to the United States in 1998, Johns changed his name from Michael Lee to Michael Johns. Before focusing on his singing career, Johns was a keen sportsman. He won a tennis scholarship to become a professional tennis player and also played Australian rules football for the USAFL club Atlanta Kookaburras.

Ramiele Malubay
(born September 6, 1987) is a 20-year-old from Miramar, Florida who auditioned in Miami. Born in the Philippines, she is the only Asian American to make it the semi-finals in this season. She is also a Filipino American and her favorite singer is Regine Velasquez.

Syesha Mercado
(born January 2, 1987) is a 21-year-old from Sarasota, Florida who auditioned in Miami. During Hollywood week, she became ill and almost completely lost her voice. In preparation for her final audition, she went on voice rest and wrote down everything she had to say on a pad of paper. Prior to American Idol, she appeared on The One: Making a Music Star, a short-lived program on ABC. The show was cancelled after two weeks due to low ratings.

Syesha Mercado, the finalist that eliminated on 10th round final. Paula Abdul told : ""Hit Me Up" wasn't good enough to get into the finals."
