Many people think "Pit Bull" and automatically think 'bad,' 'viscious,' etc. But on the other hand, pit bulls are sweet, loveable, wiggle worms.
Statistically, the American Pit Bull Terrier, is the least likely dog breed to bite. That means over the All American breeds like the lab and retriever, the APBT is least likely of them all to bite a human. Go Figure! And, believe it or not there are other dogare considered more dangerous than the APBT, such as the lab. You learn something new every day, don't ya?

APBT History
The American pit bull terrier has a long history of Pit/Dog Fighting, and developed from the breedings of Bull terriers and other mastiff type dogs from years upon years back. The breed is, to this day, left unmatched towards any other dog breed accepted by any or all current dog registrations. The initial breedings of APBTs were to help gain the most "game" dog, not aggressive.

A Complete History of Fighting Dogs

These dogs are seen as warriors, and not the good kind due to the irresponsibility of those who choose to raise the breed for fighting. These are the people who have caused all the witch hunts.
This breed is a very loyal breed set to please his people. What is not heard is the history behind the pit bull. The history of family pets, who happened to have a job of dog fighting. These dogs were bred to dog fight, but any sign on human aggression were immediately euthanized. You don't hear that this breed were once known as 'nanny dogs' for their loyalty to the children in the family. You don't hear about the pit bulls in the war, not used as fighting dogs towards the enemy but as therapy dogs or retrieval dogs.

Breed Description
Physical Appearance
The American pit bull terrier is a dog of power, willingness, and loyalty. They are known for their solid bodies and large, broad heads, held by a thickly muscled neck. The body of a pit bull is VERY muscular and stocky. They tend to range from 18-22 inches in height and 22-110 pounds in weight.
In many cases the ears are cropped, and the tails docked. But according to the UKC, docked tails are not accepted for the breed.
The eyes are round, and any color is acceptable, usually ranging from brown to blue.
Its coat is made up of thick, short, shiny hair. The colorations of the pit bull breed tend to range from tan to chocolate, fawn to blue, brindle to white, and anything there in between.
American Pit Bull Temperament
With their goofy smiles and determined faces, these dogs truly have the want to please. This breed is loyal till death. By far the bad reputation that they have following their name, just does not fit. By not means are they baby killers or man haters.Just remember that when picking out a puppy, you want to perform your own temperament tests, to ensure that the puppy has the temperament that you are looking for.
As with ANY breed, with proper socialization, affection, and raising, these dogs can be the perfect family pet. They will never show an ounce of aggression in their bodies.
These dogs are extremely loyal and affectionate. They are very eager to please their human companion. Pit bulls are both courageous and intelligent.
Pit bulls are highly protective over their pet parents and their property, and will fight an enemy if the time deserves it. They are super friendly dogs, but very protective none-the-less.
This breed is definitely known for it's stubbornness, and a strong, firm hand is needed when dealing with this particular breed. Now, although they are intelligent and eager to please, making training of basic obedience simple a quick process, the one in command needs to be the human. These dogs will try to control the situation as to whether or not he chooses to listen. You must make them cohere to the situation at hand.
Now, this is not to say that the American Pit Bull is the dog for everyone, they can attack people and other animals, but given proper training and socialization, a good pet parent should not have any concerns about severe dog attacks related to "pit bulls".

Myths About Pit Bulls
Breed Specific Legislation
BSL does not just affect pit bulls, it affects shepherds, chow chows, akitas, rottweilers, dobermans, huskies, and other various dog breeds. If we don't fight breed specific legislations, all dogs will eventually be encompassed and entertwined in BSL laws and bills. In many cases a grandfather clause will be added to the end of the bill, saying that if you have owned your dog for a certain time frame before the bill has been passed you can keep the dog. But, under those circumstances they will give several restrictions such as outdoor dog kennels and muzzles if in public.
I personally, think these laws and clauses furthers the fear in some people. If you see a dog with a muzzle, you automatically assume the dog will bite. If you see a pit bull in a muzzle, fear rises higher.
Why should BSL affect only the good owners and their dogs suffer when the problem is not them. When the problem is the bad owners. With BSL, the bad owners will move to another county or state, or they will find another breed to fight. Eventually they will run out of bully breeds. What then? They'll fight labs and retreivers and terriers. Thann all dog breeds will be encompassed in breed specific legislations.

Rehabilitation or Euthanasia
The big question in light of the current Michael Vick scandal is whether or not Pit bulls should be rehabilitated. I personally, think that they should be given a chance. Why should thousands of pit bulls a year be euthanized just becuase they're pit bulls. I do understand that when a dog comes into a shelter with a 100% bad attitude and has no hope of rehabilitation and a happy life with a family. But, in some cases, pit bulls are euthanized for being born a pit bull.Like any other dog of all other breeds, pit bulls and pit bull type dogs should be evaluated and given the opportunity for a new life.

Debunking Pit Bull Myths
Many people see the myths around the pit bull before they see the pit bull.
Below are some of the commong myths about American Pit Bull Terriers. You can find more information Here.1. Pit bulls are inheritantly dangerous and may attack at any time.
According to the American Temperament Testing Society, the pit bull is no more vicious than the golden retriever or the beagle. The pit bull passed with a high 83.9%, compared to the average 77% scored by other breeds.
2.Pit bulls have lock jaws.
These are dogs, with a bone anatomy just like that of any other dog, except they possess alot more strength and will power.
3. A pit bull that attacks other animals will go after people next.
Animal aggression and human aggression are two completely different things. Pit bulls were once trained to fight and bring down large animals, hence the possession of animal aggression in some pit bulls is not unnatural. They have always been family pets before all.
4. Pit bulls and children do not belong together.
They make wonderful companions for kids, and are great family pets when properly trained and socialized. However, children should be taught how to properly interact with dogs and when to respect quiet time. Children and dogs (no matter what breed), should never be left alone without adult supervision. In the past, pit bulls were known as 'nanny dogs.'
5. Pit Bulls don't feel pain.
Pit Bulls have the same nervous system of any other breed, and they can and do feel pain. Historically, pit bulls will tolerate or ignore discomfort better than other breeds, but that does not mean that they do not feel pain.
6. Pit Bulls attack more people than any other breed.
"Pit bull" actually consists of a variety of bully breed mixes that include mixes of APBT, AmStaff, Bull Terriers, and other breeds, mongrels that appear muscular with broad chests, and any media appointed "pit bull," so getting an accurate statistic is a tad hard to get. But, considering these factors, the actual number of attacks attributable to American Pit Bull Terriers is considerably lower than represented, as the breed is least likely of breeds to bite.

I ABSOLUTELY love this lens, I applaud you for taking a stand and TELLING THE TRUTH about this loving, sweet and amazing breed!
As a Pit Bull lover I feel discriminated and I hate when people look at me and judge my baby, just because of his/her breed. Isn't this the same as the racial segregation America lived years ago? It is the same.
The world needs to know the truth! Thanks for using your lens to do just that!

What happened in the second half of this century that led to the bad rap these dogs got? I wonder if the Hearst Corp. had anything to do with it on a large scale? 5* for this information.

Great lens. My apartment has pit bulls on the list of aggressive dogs not allowed on the complex, but they don't even know my dog is a pit because he doesn't have cropped ears, an over sized head, and massive chests. makes me laugh that they ban a breed and they don't even know what the breed looks like.

Great lens. Thank you exposing many myths surrounding this breed. In a lot of cases it's the owner who should get the bad reputation not the dog or the breed.

Great lens. I own a Pit Bull also, and he is the sweetest dog i have ever come across. it a shame that people don't realize that any fault of any dog, regardless of breed, is due to the humans raising the dog, and not the dog itself. hopefully people will open their eyes to that.
