The Art Spirit:
Robert Henri Notes, Articles, Fragments of Letters and Talks

In 1892, wanting to show a contemporary view of the working class, Robert Henri, an American painter, gathered together four young realists who painted scenes portraying life in the poorer neighborhoods of New York City. Their names were John Sloan, William A. Glackens, Everett Shinn, and George Luks. Henri stated: "Paint what you see. Paint what is real to you." Many inspirational quotes for artists are in his book, The Art Spirit Their work was exhibited in a show in 1908 and that show included three other artists who were painters of other subject matter. They were Arthur B. Davies, Ernest Lawson, and Maurice Prendergast. They exhibited together only once but are known as The Eight. From Webster: "Ash-Can: of or relating to a group of Twentieth Century American painters who depicted city life realistically." The Ash Can School was not an organized group, the term "Ash Can" was coined in 1934.

ABOUT THE IMPRESSIONISM ART MOVEMENT
Impressionism, a 19th century art movement, began in Paris when a group of artists, not wanting to paint by traditional standards, found their work being turned down by the major exhibit. Although artists in many locations painted outdoors rather than in the studio in order to capture the effect of light, it was a group of artists in Paris whose work was not accepted in academy exhibits who formed their own show in 1874.. They painted overall effects rather than details using brush strokes that were visible on the canvas rather than using carefully blended strokes as in the academic style. The movement, Impressionism, was started, the name coming from the title of Monet's painting, Impression: Sunrise. In the 1880s, their work was presented in exhibits in America. Some years later, Modern Art became more popular. However, there has been a return to interest in Impressionism as major museums have exhibited the work.

John Sloan

John French Sloan (August 2, 1871 - September 7, 1951) was a U.S. artist. As a member of The Eight, a group of American artists, he became a leading figure in the Ashcan School of realist artists. He was known for his urban genre painting and ability to capture the essence of neighborhood life in New York City, often through his window. Sloan has been called "the premier artist of the Ashcan School who painted the inexhaustible energy and life of New York City during the first decades of the twentieth century", and an "early twentieth-century realist painter who embraced the principles of socialism and placed his artistic talents at the service of those beliefs." William Glackens

William James Glackens (March 13, 1870-May 22, 1938) was a U.S. realist painter. Glackens studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and later moved to New York City, where he co-founded what came to be called the Ashcan School art movement. This group of artists, dubbed by the press "the Eight Independent Painters" or The Eight, chose to exhibit their works without pre-approval by the juries of the existing art establishment. He became known for his dark-hued paintings of street scenes and daily life in the city's neighborhoods. His later work was brighter in tone, and showed the influence of Renoir. During much of his career as a painter, Glackens also worked as an illustrator for newspapers and magazines in Philadelphia and New York City
