Is Dental Insurance a Rip-Off?

Dental Insurance is a Rip-off
I was at the dentist yesterday and happy to know that I had insurance...
Sitting in the lobby, waiting to see the dentist a man was checking out. When the receptionist handed him his treatment plan and told him what portion his insurance would cover...and how much he would have to pay. His jaw dropped open in surprise. She told him his portion would be over $6,000 and that there was this great program that would allow him to finance his care over the next 18 months with monthly payments of $400 a month.
Yikes, now I was worried.
It made me nervous, as I knew I had a filling out and other potential problems in my own mouth and was worried how much my treatment plan might cost me?
After my cleaning, multitudes of dental xrays, and a brief visit with the dentist, the dentist told me that things were not that bad. Wooohooo, no cavities... just replace the filling and one other filling looks a little iffy... will just put a crown on it. I was also told that I would need to come back every 3 months for a cleaning to stay on top of any gum disease.
Next step, back to the from desk to get the GOOD news and what my treatment plan would cost.
Total cost....$1610....
Yikes
They also told me I need to come back every 3 months for cleaning...of course my insurance will not cover the extra two cleanings... so that is another $300.
Yikes, again! I thought she said things looked pretty good.
My insurance limit was $1200... but wait there is more.
Reasonable and customary charges.... I still have to pay $663 our of my own pocket.
Yikes again...it got me thinking.
Why have I been paying over $100 a month for dental insurance for years? It seems to me that I am losing money here. You do the math.

- Let me get this straight.... A patient needs say, a Crown and Core build-up. The normal Dentist charge may be about $995 +/-, depending on the dentist. That dentist won't budge of their HIGH pricing, not even for a Self Pay customer. BUT, if I will agree to go pay a 3rd Party a monthly fee PLUS give that 3rd Party my personal and private Credit Card info, that same dentist will then discount my charge by about $455! And the dentists tells me he gets nothing from that 3rd Party Dental Plan Company. Is he lying to his patients?
Begs the question.... If any dentist is willing to gladly accept $540 for a $955 bill, and IF we agree to give out our personal ID info to someone else, that tells ME that a dentist IS ripping off its patients. AND, if a dentist will discount a procedure by such a large amount IF we give out our CC info, then HOW can a dentist be trusted with our teeth? What kind of dentist goes in Ripping you off? And if the dentist will Rip you off on the money end, are they also Ripping you off on cheap materials? If a dentist is honest and reputable, then why can't that dentist just adjust pricing according to what they are WILLING to accept if you surrender and expose your CC info?
Just another example of wasteful consumer spending on healthcare costs. We are being forced to overpay so large companies can make huge profits from people who cannot afford to pay those inflated charges. And the government is trying to force us into paying healthcare premiums plus raise taxes?
Someone needs to put a stop to this insanity.....
Oh, BTW: Ever notice how dentists take off or Fridays too? Due to over charging patients? Do you make enough money working 4 days a week in this economy to be able to take off 3 days? Where do you think all that money comes from?

- A dental policy, although it will cover for this eventuality, is really in place to pay for the constant care that you require to look after your teeth and gums for the long term so that you never require any serious dental work in the future. Obviously, the insurance companies are well aware of this and will ensure that you have all the necessary preventative work required to hopefully save them money in the future and save you the stress and inconvenience caused by serious dental procedures.

- Dental insurance plan able to help for save some of the treatment costs but here is a cons also that these dental plans offer less flexibility in accessing dental services and treatment costs. I have read your share thanks for this because this is helpful to keep us aware.

- I agree, most insurance, just just dentistry is a RIP OFF! They'll do anything to get away from paying out. I have just had to have my washing machine looked at, and the insurance company have written it off. Even though I have paid them insurance for the last 4 years, I am told that I need to pay 70% towards a new machine - to be honest, it would have been cheaper having no insurance, saving some money every month and buying my own machine when it eventually broke!
