The best amethysts are a deep medium purple color with hints of rose, but these gems can range in color from deep violet through lilac,lavender and even mauve.Some stones are advertised as "Green Amethyst" but since amethysts can only be purple, these are mis-named. They are made by exposing very pale amethyst quartz to heat, treatments,which turn the stone green. True Amethysts by definition must be purple, so although they are very attractive stones, what are advertised and sold as green amethysts should more properly be called Green Quartz, or Prasiolite.

Jewels have been associated with certain months since earliest times. Different stones were held by the ancients to have certain properties and powers. It was believed that these powers were enhanced at certain times of the year. From these beliefs evolved what we today call our birthstones. Today there is less superstion, and we seldom believe that gemstones have actual powers, but simply enjoy wearing the one that is our "special" jewel. And it's nice to think that wearing your birthstone just might bring a little bit of luck!
Facts and folklore about amethysts: Amethysts are members of the quartz family. Quartz comes in a variety of colors, but only purple quartz can be called amethyst.
The word amethyst came from the Greek words for "not drunk". It was so named because the stone was believed to prevent one from getting drunk. Because of this, those who could afford it had their drinking cups carved from amethyst in the belief that the wine contained in them would not make them intoxicated.
Purple has always been a color associated with royalty, thus Amethyst has traditionally been known as the jewel of royalty. Amethysts were believed to be helpful in alleviating headaches, insomnia and hearing problems. Besides their reputation for preventing inebriation, amethysts were also believed to be helpful in curing addictions.
The Amethyst's powers were supposed to bring spiritual development, courage and healing, and to confer upon its wearer the qualities of amiability and gentleness
