Amherst, Ohio is a beautiful community located in Lorain County Ohio. The city has a rich, interesting heritage, and its inhabitants are very proud of the safe streets, beautiful historic downtown, and the renowned school system. Amherst is known as the "Sandstone Center of the World," and its quarries were once one of the most prolific suppliers of sandstone for building projects all around the country. Even to this day, structures around Amherst and Lorain County can be found that were built with sandstone from the local quarries. Amherst is currently served by Mayor David Taylor.

The History of Amherst, Ohio

Amherst has a rich, vibrant and interesting history.

Amherst, Ohio City HallGerman immigrants established the town of Amherst OH at the beginning of the 19th Century. The founder of Amherst, a man named Jacob Shupe, built a gristmill, sawmill and distillery in the new settlement, and went on to encourage an influx of other industries in the area. His home was located near Beaver Creek on a hill, and you can visit his original residence today (it's part of a historical museum in the city).

Thanks to as many as nine sandstone quarries operating in the Amherst at its peak, the city became known as the Sandstone Capital of the World. The quarries provided grindstones and building materials for projects in Lorain County and across the country.

Amherst OhioIn the last United States Census, which was completed in 2000, Amherst Ohio had a total population of 11,797 people. At the time, the city was home to 3,388 families and 4,459 households.

Amherst is a family-focused community, and its residents take great pride in their clean streets, well-managed downtown and local schools. Politics in Amherst is much less partisan than in other Lorain County cities, with both Democrats and Republicans being represented on the City Council and in city government.
