Angelina Jolie is Mariane Pearl
The sad saga of slain Wall Street Journal South Asia bureau chief Danny Pearl is ultimately -- and very intimately -- Mariane Pearl's story.
The film adapted from Mariane Pearl's 2003 harrowing memoir A Mighty Heart: The Brave Life and Death of My Husband Danny Pearl, is a terse, methodical account of Pearl's kidnapping and murder in Pakistan as seen through the eyes of those who sought his return.
Having covered the U.S. bombing of Afghanistan following the Sept. 11 attacks, the Pearls were working as journalists in Karachi, Pakistan, on Jan. 23, 2002 -- the day Danny, chasing a story about foiled shoe bomber Richard Reid, got into a cab and never returned.
Sticking close to the very pregnant Mariane (Jolie), the film recounts the restless five-week search for the man's whereabouts and his kidnappers' identities, all accompanied by a hailstorm of media attention.
It is a harrowing but inspiring account of one woman's struggle with overwhelming tragedy and her refusal to give in to prejudice.

Mariane Pearl
A French journalist and practicing Buddhist, Mariane Pearl is the widow of Wall Street Journal correspondent Daniel Pearl who was kidnapped and murdered by Islamic extremists in Pakistan four months after the September 11 attacks. During this time, she was pregnant with their first child.
In her memoir A Mighty Heart: The Brave Life and Death of My Husband Danny Pearl, Marianne Pearl offers a close up reflection on the human dynamics of the war on terror and the courage of the Pakistani security officers who fought to find and save her husband.
Mariane Pearl doesn't perceive her husband's death as a defeat. She says that years of Buddhist practice and chanting gave her the clarity to see exactly what the terrorists goals were, and how to resist them a spiritual practice of defiance that sustains her even today. Host Krista Tippett talks with Mariane Pearl about her story and how she's given it meaning.

They want to kill joy in me, thus I will laugh again.
They want to paralyze me, therefore I will take action.
They want to silence me--therefore I will speak out.
