The man behind the glasses

Amil Shah has always wanted to be an optician. When asked why during an interview, he was reported to have said that as a youngster he always wanted to be ablt to travel to less developed parts of the world and help people enrish their everyday lives through the gift of sight.

Well, whilst he isn't a full time humanitarian, Amil Shah continues to make his contribution by doing regular eye camps around the world where he provides eye care at no charge to those receiving treatment.

At this momnent, Amil is the head of glasses at the specsavers in Ilford. A director of the practise, whilst his role is certainly one that focuses on the running and management of the proctice, he still keeps himself grounded by performing eye tests for patients personally.

Specsavers Glasses Wearer Of The Year

Specsavers Spectacle Wearer Of the Year grand final 2008

Glamorous Saint Melanie Blatt picks up Specsavers celebrity specs wearer of the year award. Glamorous singer and former All Saint Melanie Blatt was today [Tuesday 21 October] crowned Specsavers Celebrity Spectacle Wearer of 2008. Mel, who recently won Gordon Ramsays F Word with best friend and former band mate, Nicole Appleton, has worn specs since she gave birth to her daughter, at which point her eyesight deteriorated. She says: There are many iconic male specs wearers out there, like David Tennant and Alan Carr, but you dont see many females who wear their glasses in such an obvious and public way. I love to wear my specs to make a style statement, daytime and evening, and have a wardrobe of frames for different outfits and looks. They are also a great cover up if I dont feel like wearing much make up I just pop my glasses on and I feel transformed. Its also really important to demonstrate to children that glasses are cool as so many children are still bullied about wearing glasses. Thats why its so fantastic to collect this award and be recognised as a prominent glasses wearer. Flamboyant specs wearer and king of the jungle, Christopher Biggins, was presented a Lifetime Achievement Award for Services to Specs. Christopher says: I have always worn specs as they allow me a little individuality! I like to have fun with my glasses and match them to my outfits and mood. I'm thrilled to be receiving this award as everyone who wears specs should wear them loud and proud! Comedienne and writer Jenny Éclair was named Specsavers Iconic Specs Wearer Award. Jenny is currently promoting her book Wendy: the bumper book of fun for women of a certain age. Jenny says: I am thrilled to have won the Iconic Specs Wearer the last award I won was Crufts back in 1996. Truly I am proud. Specsavers founder Dame Mary Perkins says: Melanie looks fantastic in her glasses, stylish and sophisticated and a perfect role model for young specs wearing females. Christopher Biggins and Jenny Éclair have always been high profile specs wearers so its fantastic to be able to recognise them in this way. Specs wearing style guru Gok Wan presented Melanie Blatt, Christopher Biggins and Jenny Éclair their accolades at last nights Spectacle Wearer of the Year Awards. The star-studded event, hosted by breakfast televisions golden couple Ben Shephard and Jenni Falconer, also saw the Specsavers Spectacle Wearer of the Year crowned. It followed Specsavers annual search for ordinary people who look extraordinary in glasses, which celebrity stylist and TV presenter Gok launched in April. Among the other celebrities to join Melanie Blatt, Christopher Biggins and Jenny Éclair on the red carpet at the final at Londons Waldorf Hilton Hotel were, Olympic swimmer and Strictly Come Dancings Mark Foster, wife of rocker Rod Stewart Penny Lancaster-Stewart, ex-Atomic Kitten Natasha Hamilton, Nancy Sorrell and Gloria Hunniford. An auction in aid of anti-bullying charity Kidscape, led by Gok Wan, saw money cant buy prizes come under the hammer, such as afternoon tea at The Lanesborough with rock legend Rod Stewart and his wife Penny Lancaster-Stewart, an exclusive fashion makeover with C4s celebrity stylist Gok Wan, dinner with Christopher Biggins at The Ivys private members club and a made-to-measure mens suit by top British designer, Jasper Conran.
