Making a Piece of Furniture
Furniture is made beautiful by the materials. A good piece of furniture feels and looks alive, that is why great care is taken when selecting the wood for a piece of furniture. It is not simply made out of whatever is found lying around. There are certain types of woods that are used for certain types of pieces. Primarily the Amish use the following woods for their furniture, oak, quarter sawn oak, cherry, maple, hickory, black walnut, cedar and in some cases pine. Of all these Oak is the primary wood of choice. Not only is it long lasting but it has a lovely design to it, created by grain lines and it has a warm color to it. Clothing chests are often made of cedar because not only is cedar good for keeping away clothing eating bugs it smells significantly better than moth balls.
The style is the next thing though this is sometimes the first to be decided since style may indicate the type of wood to be used often times it is after the wood is chosen that the style is selected. There are a number of different types that the Amish produce furniture in. These styles include the Mission, Shaker and Queen Anne styles which are the most commonly recognized followed by Traditional, contemporary, Bavarian, bunker hill, Hampton, McCoy, Rustic, Cottage, Beachfront, Spring Hill, Shaker Hill, Carlisle, there is also West Lake, Rio Grande, Southwestern Slat Mission and Royal Mission.
People who like simple designs are more likely to look at designs along the Mission and Shaker styles which feature clean square lines and minimalist design. Bunker Hill and Queen Anne designs are a bit more ornamental. Also each one of the woodworkers are artists and as a result each of the pieces they create are going to be different, unique and that is part of the appeal of this type of furniture. A craftsman can make the same type of piece using the same type of wood and each piece will be different.
While individual pieces are available it is the sets that really stand out. You can have pieces made for any room of your home such as bedroom, living room, dining room and you can even have pieces made for your home office it is the matching sets that stick out. There is a reason usually matching sets are made from the same wood. In other words the pieces are designed using the same trees to make all the pieces rather than just randomly picked pieces.
