One of the key elements of Amish culture is the family. In general, Amish families have 7 to 10 children. Extended family members sometimes also live within the same household, such as grandparents or older relatives. This can make mealtimes very lively indeed. In the Amish family, fathers and older sons work in nearby fields or workshops, while mothers and older daughters work around the house. This means that entire families can gather together for daily meals. This is a time to treasure, to share and bond with family in a way not usually found in our more modern busy world. Oftentimes, too, those from the local settlement community as well as extended family also choose to spend time together during meals. The family dining room table also serves as a central piece to the weekly church gatherings that alternate families host, as well as the large wedding celebrations that are held in the Amish community.

Making high-quality and enduring dining room furniture for families, the community and the "English" (non-Amish) around them is a labor of love for Amish craftsmen, who labor painstakingly in their workshops to produce works of art. These men find great satisfaction as they create heirloom pieces that reflect values of simplicity, excellence and utility. These pieces are built of the finest wood and in the Amish tradition, so that they complement the family mealtime tradition. As couples become newly married in the Amish community, they set up their own households months after the wedding ceremony. First, they live with the bride's family, and during this time they seek foundational pieces, including a dining table, to build a household on. As they begin to build their own families, too, the dining table they acquire will fill its role over and over again as it promotes family bonding to become a treasured and long-lasting heirloom.

Large family gatherings to celebrate special events and holidays have been a lasting tradition in the American culture, too, but regular mealtimes have sometimes gone by the wayside. Today, many in modern society are rediscovering the value of these regular family meal times. As they seek to recapture this crucial family bonding time in their own daily routines, these families can increase the significance of their traditional meals and special family gatherings by having their own durable dining set, made by the Amish. Farming has historically been the mainstay of the Amish community's economic base and still continues to be so; still, a growing population and high land prices have led many more young men to turn to other pursuits and pursue a craft, such as furniture building.

When men choose to take up the craftsmanship of furniture building, they can convert outbuildings or build new buildings to house their new businesses. There is now a thriving market that demands handcrafted Amish furniture. There are a growing number of woodworking shops, so there is now a wide selection of furniture available in many styles. You can also custom order furniture by features such as wood type, leg style, dimensions, skirting and finish. Amish woodworkers sell their creations from their own shops or work in tandem with local "English" businessmen, who distribute their goods to nearby stores or sell them over the Internet.

These dining room sets are available in several styles, including more contemporary styles and specific styles such as Portland, Malibu, Franklin, sheaf-backed, Hoosier, French country, Queen Anne, Windsor, Shaker, and the familiar Mission style. Because Amish workmanship dictates that only woods of the finest quality be used, choices are comprised of maple or pine, walnut, cherry, or solid oak. There are no imitations, laminates or veneers used. When you choose a dining table, you may want to choose your leg supports, which may include trestle, pedestal, or the basic four-leg design. Tabletops themselves can be octagonal, rectangular, square, oval or circular, and if they have leaves, these can be designed as stow a leaf, separate center, or side drop.
