Old Fashioned Challenges, New Fangled World
Amish children are an interesting topic, and some of them have recently come into the news for their self-sacrificing bravery. I have the benefit of knowing (and loving) some Amish children, who have been welcoming and joyful. They are a central part of the Amish community, and virtually everything the Amish do is in consideration of their children. While all of us care about our kids, actually being with families and seeing normal daily interactions, I can see that our larger society has lost something very important somewhere along the way.
This lense is evolving from what the Amish make for their children, to one where information about Amish children is the central focus.
Thanks so much for your patience~

Children Farmers
The Work Ethic Begins Early
Very young Amish children aren't required to do any work, any more than our children are. However, children's curiosity and their desire to be a part of family life lead to them taking an early interest in the activities of the family farm and business quite young.Often, if a family has chickens or small animals, the small children will begin with helping to feed them. Responsibility is held out as a great good to Amish children, and as they grow, they desire to take on more and more responsibilities.
It is very important to Amish parents to train children in all aspects of caring for themselves and the families they hope to have, so according to the ability of the children, they are given daily chores and the school year is determined by agricultural seasons.

Tender Care from the Start
Instant popularity!
From the instant she was born, this little bit has been of great interest and attention by all the children in her family, her extended family, her neighbors and friends.Amish children do their part to help care for the tender little newborns and small children. Caring for the dependent and innocent, in their needs and their comfort, is a critical element in the enormous and compassionate hearts they have all their lives.
Caring for the less able, the smaller, the weaker (human or animal), makes Amish children, both boys and girls, very thoughtful and considerate of the needs of others.
