Amish Bishop's Upcoming Meeting

Rare opportunity to ask your questions!

From the lens Amish Farm.

Amish Bishops are having a special meeting about the state of farming, the effects of NAIS on Amish farms, the Amish position on this program, and what they anticipate the effects will be on their community. I have been invited to be part of this meeting and to bring questions. I am also inviting you! Don't miss the opportunity to submit your questions!

Interesting and factual information on Amish farming. Thanks for sharing

I had no idea that the Amish were considering GM crops! That is outrageous and worse that any other sin that they could possibly commit. They would do just as much damage to the world doing this as they would by driving a car! there is no reason why they cannot keep being organic. Tell them to introduce permaculture techniques into their farming if they are not already doing so. Those techniques will give them better quality high yielding crops than GM would!

Extensive info and resources - thanks for sharing. I really had no idea they were facing so many problems... It is tough to be different from the world. Everything is geared for the non-Amish, and is not that easy to change.

Sept. 23, 09, an Amish gentleman Emanuel J. Miller, Jr., was taken to Clark County Court in Neillsville, Wis., for an evidentiary hearing on complex civil forfeiture for failing to register his premises. The case immediately moved to the first stage of trial. Miller and his father, as well as their church deacon, testified as to their objections to being forced to use the NAIS premises identification number (PIN). As USDA has proudly proclaimed in many glossy brochures, premises registration is the "first step" in the NAIS, and the Wisconsin Amish have become quite aware of this.
Oct. 21, 2009, in Polk County, Wis., R-CALF USA Members Pat and Melissa Monchilovich are going to trial for the same charges of complex civil forfeiture. Pat and his wife raise cattle in Cumberland, Wis., and have failed to register their property as a premises with the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture and Consumer Protection

Some Amish in Wisconsin have been arrested for refusing to participate in NAIS.
Under NAIS (National animal Identification System) they will have to register their premises with the govt, microchip all their animals and file reports every birth, death and where they go with them. If animal disease suspected, the USDA can kill all animals in 6 mi radius (140sq mi) All those owning even one animal livestock or pet will be required to do this. The reason for this insanity is so corporate ag can say the meat they sell to japan is safe. but they get only one lot number per groups of animals raised on factory farms! Yes it's that goofy a program! And the poor Amish are being prosecuted and persecuted for resisting. See no nais dot org for more info on the program that will affect all who eat!

Are the Amish open to becoming part of local coops. My husband and I are considering starting a coop to provide our community with organic food and wondered how we might we connect with local Amish farmers.

My husband and I used to live near Pennsylvania Amish country. Very beautiful farms indeed, though not all were organic. Some used plenty of pesticide. Just sayin'. But we did buy from them quite a bit and enjoyed their baked goods.

I called Pennsylvania Gazette to say some Amish dairy farmers were giving away herds rather than accept NAIS. I said that Monsanto was behind NAIS and that Hillary Clinton's campaign is run by Monsanto - the same corporation blocking labeling of milk with its GE-hormone it. I said that if Hillary gets in, she will - like Bill did with the FDA - put Monsanto in charge of her new centralized Department of Food "Safety" and at the next Mad Cow "scare" (not caused by small farmers), she would boldly make NAIS mandatory. I said that rBGH milk increases the risk of breast cancer up to 7 fold.

The editor, Tom Birdsong, said he's not worried about the milk, don't trust the internet, Pittsburgh is not farm country, he's not interested in one-issue topics cuz he does political reporting. He never heard of NAIS, or farmers being sued, and if true, how come it's not in the paper (ahem), or farmers calling.

    His number is 412-263-3068, tbirdsong@post-gazette.com

Leave these people alone. Considering that govt. can not do anything right lately, do not mess up this simple beautiful religious way of life.

I would like to know what the Amish will do when push comes to shove, because of Government regulations and such they lose their right to farm in America. The government nows considers it a privlage to farm and raise animals, will the amish fight for that God given right?
