Mark of the Beast
RFID Chips, (radio frequency identification) are a very controversial subject for any reason. For the Amish, however, this technological development is extremely alarming. In the normal course of living, they avoid technologies as much as they can. However, numbering themselves, or their animals, to them is the 'mark of the beast,' something they cannot cooperate with under any circumstances. In two states, Wisconsin and Indiana, the voluntary national program, NAIS, has been made compulsory at the state level. The Amish have opposed cooperating with the states in chipping their animals, feeling that it is only a matter of time before the government chips humans. This lens is about this challenge facing the Amish, and us.
Please remember to rate us, take the poll, and sign the guest book! On the right, you can add this lense to your favorites and email it to a friend you'd like to have see it. One more in a series of DANGEROUS Executive Orders
- Bush orders feds to collect biometric data
- Biometric technologies use electronic means to capture individual-specific data on physical characteristics, including fingerprints, eye retina scanning, face recognition mapping and body imaging. The contextual data that accompanies biometric data includes information on date and place of birth, citizenship, current address and address history, current employment and employment history, current phone numbers and phone number history, use of government services and tax filings.
Other contextual data may include bank account and credit card histories, plus criminal database records on a local, state and federal level. The database also could include legal judgments or other public records documenting involvement in legal disputes, child custody records and marriage or divorce records.

- DHS | REAL ID Final Rule
- The Department of Homeland Security has issued a final rule to establish minimum standards for state-issued driver's licenses and identification cards in accordance with the REAL ID Act of 2005.
These regulations set standards for states to meet the requirements of the REAL ID Act, including:
* information and security features that must be incorporated into each card;
* proof of identity and U.S. citizenship or legal status of an applicant;
* verification of the source documents provided by an applicant; and
* security standards for the offices that issue licenses and identification cards.
This final rule also provides a process for States to seek an additional extension of the compliance deadline to May 11, 2011, by demonstrating material compliance with the core requirements of the Act and this rule. - ABC News: Government Forgets Privacy on New IDs

My Answer, also August 11, 2007
Thank you for contacting me about the Amish and their position on RFID Chips.
As you were raised near the Amish community in Indiana, you well know how reticent they are in respects to technology. Their standards for using technology of any kind are whether they are 1. necessary; 2. benefit and do not harm the family or community; 3. are not clearly spoken against in Holy Scripture.
The Amish happen to be the canaries in the coal mine, in that they are the first to suffer losses as this technology is introduced more and more. In my own State of Michigan, the Amish in the Upper Peninsula have given up animal husbandry of any kind rather than succumb to the forced chipping even of only their animals. This was a devastating blow to their ability to support themselves, but, in order to be true to what they understand the Lord to be asking of us, and the clear admonitions against the 'Mark of the Beast' in Revelation, it is better for them to 'lose the world and gain their souls.'
In some communities, and even in this State of Michigan, some minor accommodations have been temporarily made to 'demonstrate respect' for the Amish community's beliefs, however, no one believes that these temporary measures will last for long.
As time has progressed on the issue of RFID chips, the Amish have become less and less open to even discussing the issue. In their mind, and in the minds of many other Christians, RFID is absolutely, positively and without the slightest doubt 'the Mark of the Beast' as spoken of in Revelation chapter 13.
Because of this they certainly don't want to discuss with anyone, not press, not politicians, and probably not especially someone who works for RFID interests, anything relative to this mark, what their thinking about this issue may be, nor any particular strategies or remedies they may feel they have (if any).
For the Amish, it is a time for community prayer on the issue. They have already seen that they are being prohibited in multiple ways from buying and selling because of their refusal to submit to RFID. Scripture, along with prophesying (warning) about this mark also makes it clear that true Christians that refuse the mark will suffer martyrdom because of their refusal. I believe the Amish expect that, along with being the first to be unable to buy and sell, or even to support themselves without that chip, that they will also be the first in the wave of martyrs that will surely occur because of refusal to cooperate.
It is likely that you have noticed that, without a referendum in America or in Canada, that the North American Union is nearly finally in place, which will supersede our own Constitution and the Constitutions of Canada and Mexico as well. The passage of the REAL ID Act makes the very personal and private information of citizens of all three countries placed into one single database. Along with this will come the end of the US Dollar, and a new monetary unit called the Amero will be introduced. While there is likely to be a great deal of citizen opposition to this entire plan, chipping the entire populace of the three countries prior to the institution of this new monetary unit will be necessary and is speeding along at great pace. Once the chipping is in place, the US Dollar can be 'retired' and the new unit, the Amero, can be instituted as purely electronic funds, accessible only through the chips that have been placed in the bodies of the citizens. Again, this is further proof that the chips are the Mark of the Beast, in that NOBODY will be able to buy or sell anything without them, this time in the context of a dictatorship that no citizen, state or province even had the opportunity to vote for or against.
This North American Union is building a ten lane superhighway from Mexico to Canada, with the proviso that trucks who are loading with Chinese goods from the newly expanded Panama Canal, manned by the Chinese (as a gift from the Clinton Administration), will never be stopped at ANY BORDER, because they will be designated 'trusted travelers' due to the chips embedded in the trucks and the drivers. Given that China has enforced the 'one child policy' and has had millions of abortions of only female children, with the blessing of NARAL & NOW; there is now an ENORMOUS standing army of military aged men who will NEVER have a wife or children. The boats shipping 'goods' from China are being built TEN TIMES the size of any American boats; they will be going through their newly expanded Panama Canal, shipping whatever they please, with no inspection whatsoever. Through there can come weapons, terrorists, poisoned goods, and military personnel, without ever once being examined or questioned.
Well known to the government, are TWO SETS of individuals who will oppose this entire project.
The first set will be patriots who, without necessarily relying on religion for their motivation, will not accept that there is ANY international agreement that should supersede or overturn the Constitution of the United States, which guarantees LIFE, LIBERTY and the PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS. These Patriots have fought, lived and even died for this. They have extensive family histories of service to our Country in sure dedication and love for the best country in the world. These individuals will be delineated as enemies of the interests of the North American Union, with whatever incumbent pograms will accompany the effort to shut down this area of opposition.
The second set of those who oppose the pending destruction of our Country will be the Christians, who believe the scripture has forewarned about this very event, both here and as it is being implemented in Europe. This community seeks in prayer to understand the Will of God in this matter, and whether their faith is strong enough to face arrest and martyrdom; homelessness; starvation; and all manner of privations that will become theirs by the simple exercise of their rights as American citizens to refuse this Mark of the Beast.
As history has proven, technology and power can be used for the good of the people, or for evil intentions. Even unintended consequences have had devastating effects. Who hasn't had enough of evil science, evil medicine, evil economics, evil politics?
As we run headlong into this hideous betrayal of all the values that made America great and brought an unheard of level of prosperity to untold millions, I am reminded of something the richest man I have ever known said to me, "NEVER risk more than you can afford to lose."
Our entire country, its wealth and the finest Constitution in the history of humanity is currently at grave risk, and it is our politicians, our elites, our media, and our capitalists that have decided it is to be sacrificed.
The Amish will have nothing to say to you, to me, to anyone that isn't already obvious by this time. The lifestyle they have purposely chosen, as their right, is coming to an end. The alternatives are a religious betrayal to the Living God Who loves them.
It is a time for preparation, spiritual preparation and prayer. They pray for us, they pray for the country, they pray for all.
God bless,
Margaret Schaut

NEW INFORMATION: North American Union RFID Chips
YOUR total private citizen information to Mexico AND Canada databases
for Canada, U.S. and Mexico
To have a combined data base requires compatibility of the numbering system and information captured (EDI compliant). That's the real reason behind the Real ID. No doubt the driver's license number will include country code and state-province code. Even though the card stock might look different depending upon the issuing agency, the data will be designed to reside in a single database for all three countries. Pg. 5 "The United States Real I.D. Act mandates that beginning in May 2008, a state driver license or ID card cannot be used for any federal purpose (including boarding an airplane) unless it meets specific federal requirements."
Pg. 10 "As a first step, a bi-national working group should be established to identify and develop proposals for alternative forms of "secure documentation", such as a new, more secure driver license or other forms of documentation that would comply with the requirements of the U.S. Real ID Act of 2005. Today a driver license, whether issued by a department of motor vehicles in a Province of Canada or a U.S. State is the most common form of identity document. With a photo signature and physical description, the driver license assumes a role beyond its original purpose of identifying a licensed driver and is frequently used for personal identification when crossing the border.

Amish Farmers leaving farming just as in Michigan's UP
In Wisconsin, the Amish farmers are having great difficulty complying with the NAIS regulations that have been passed, and are now being enforced, in that State. Michigan upper peninsula Amish farmers have elected to cease animal farming operations than comply with the forcing of radio frequency ID chips in their animals, and it appears that in Wisconsin, the same process is currently underway. All over the US & Canada, laws are being passed which leave no room for the conscience of the individual, in the areas of farming, like the Amish, but also in pharmacy with abortifacients, in medicine with forcing doctors to practice or provide information about abortion or euthanasia, and in outlawing speaking against social behaviors even if they are in scripture.
The Amish are just the canary in the cage. These things can and will be forced on us, too.

Michigan U.P. Amish Stop Animal Farming: RFID Policies
Chip or Quit
Michigan government sources informed me that in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, due to the State requirements for chipping ALL farm animals, the Amish have sold off their free-range animals and milking cows and have elected to produce farm instead. The State forced the chips on U.P. farmers because of an old outbreak of animal tuberculosis in wild deer, something that had been gotten under control well in advance of forcing Amish farmers to comply.
Lower Peninsula farmers are also required to chip their animals, but not until they bring them to the market, where they must purchase an identifying chip which informs buyers the farm the animal came from.
While this stopgap measure saved the Amish animal and milking compounds for the short term, any outbreak of wild animal disease anywhere in the lower part of the State can clearly be used as an excuse to force chips on their farms also.

RFID Chips being Forced on Amish Community
Indiana Amish resisting government chipping program
Concerned Amish Farmers Bring this to My Attention. The Indiana Amish community has been informed by the Indiana State Board of Animal Health that they are required to participate in a 3 phase process which will, at the second phase, put RFID chips in each of their animals.
The 3 phases are:
1. Premise identification.
2. Animal identification (when chips will be implanted in the animals)
3. Animal tracking.
In documents dated June 30, 2006, Jennifer Greiner, DVM, informs the small farmers that effective September 1, 2006, enrollment in the program will be MANDATORY, and all farm animals, defined as cattle, bison, swine, sheep, goats, and captive deer or elk, must be entered into the electronic database.
This is phase one, which informs the government exactly how many animals of each kind are on what properties.
Phase two is where the RFID chips will be implanted in each animal. While chipping horses, poultry or pets is 'voluntary,' it is strongly encouraged.
Phase three is animal tracking, for the purposes of documenting animal movements, origins of birth, point of sale.
The purposes of this program are for 'disease identification' and "will help to reduce trade barriers for greater market access,as demand for source-verified meat increases in the United States and worldwide."
In the question and answer section:
"Q. Reports say you're going to charge $1,000 a day for not participating!
A. Although BOAH (Board of Animal Health) does have the authority to impose non-compliance penalties, that is certainly not the goal. BOAH is encouraging producers to have their premises registered prior to the September 1 deadline: nevertheless, if producers arenot registered in time, BOAH staff will make an effort to identify unregistered users and help them become part of the program."
The Amish farmers I spoke with said, "if they are going to do this to our animals, its just a matter of time before they put them in people."
The Amish have historically and consistently resisted certain government impositions that violate their religious convictions. In this case, the principle to be 'no part of the world' looks like it may be one of the greatest challenges for the Amish community that they have yet experienced.

Indiana Government Answers (in 3 parts)
Board of Animal Health Responds to Squidoo Article
Ms. Greiner from the Indiana Board of Animal Health was kind enough to read and comment on the article below, dated Sept 15, 06. Her comments were given to the Amish community for their response.Ms. Greiner writes: "while the National Animal Identification System (NAIS) is a three-phase program, Indiana has passed a legal requirement only for Phase 1, or premise identification. Phases Two and Three (animal ID and animal tracking) are not part of Indiana's law, nor are they required. Animal owners may choose to participate in those programs if they wish. This includes any requirement for RFID chips."
One Amish Farmer, Mr. Y, said "that's not the horse I am hitching my cart to. The road has been set, and while the destination may take some time to get to, its a place we're not going to go if we can help it."
It has been written into the law that there is $1,000 PER DAY fine possible, which has the effect of hanging a Damocles Sword over the head of these farmers. This is for the phase 1 of the program. Ms. Greiner answers: "the $1000 per day penalty rumor is still floating around. The document from which you pulled that quote is intended to counter rumors with the facts. The fact is: September 1 has come and gone, and BOAH has not started any action to fine anyone for noncompliance. Instead, our staff is working diligently to help producers register in the program and do what is best for Indiana agriculture."
There is no reason to doubt Ms. Greiner's statement. As resistance from the Amish, and other farmers, grows, the potential for fining resisters will also grow, according to the belief of these Amish farmers. The Amish community is a law-abiding community and tries to cooperate whenever possible so as to contribute peace and order to the states where they live. They already see a limit to their cooperation with the progression of this program.
For now, phases 2(chipping)and 3(tracking)are voluntary. Once all animals and premises are registered in the electronic database, the second phase will be implemented. During the intervening period, additional legislation will be passed, likely taking into account the difficulties the BOAH has had in bringing in dissenters. If half of the small farmers and all of the Amish farmers have volunteered NOT to participate, the Amish are sure that the pressure will be stepped up in the second phase legislation.

Indiana Government Responds: Part Two
Ms. Greiner of the Indiana BOAH said, "RFID is not the only option for producers to tag their animals. Those who are concerned about issues related to the use of electronic interfaces have alternatives from which to choose to accommodate their needs and beliefs." The Amish think in the context of ALL the Amish, whatever state they live in. The Amish community said, "there are Amish groups who don't even have a checking account, because to have a number, even on a checking account, is evil." Years ago the Amish community fought the government over social security numbers, them being evil, and as the community doesn't accept social security or any social 'safety net' benefits of any kind, the government found in their favor.Ms. Greiner further states: "Third, this is not the first state or federal program that involves tagging of animals. Many Amish producers as well as others have tagged their swine for pseudorabies, cattle for brucellosis and sheep for scrapie for decades. NAIS has been introduced in an era of more technology options, which has shifted some of the discussion to electronic tagging and tracking. But, again, this is still a voluntary part of the program. BOAH has had a long history of working with Amish communities to find solutions that meet their needs while keeping these producers compliant with the law."
The Amish historically cooperated with government as far as possible, and intend to continue to do so. Specific instances of disease danger were settled on a community by community basis. Those programs, however, were not a sweeping National program, implemented State by State, backed up by high fines, with the intention of global, trackable ID of every livestock animal in existence. Continued.

Not just for Christians anymore...
Indiana Government Responds: Part 3
Of course the Board of ANIMAL health never has, never will, be the ones to chip humans. While the statement itself is insulting, the Indiana Board of Animal Health and the Amish are talking about oranges and turnips here, two different things. The Amish are unconvinced by this argument. First, they express the view that it is a matter of time before the fines WILL be enforced. Second, they believe the Federal government will be using what it has learned from chipping animals to adjust its coming program to chip people. Just as the animal program is being implemented in phases, the overall Federal program of chipping every citizen is coming in phases, beginning with animals, ending with people. Separation of the two issues, as the BOAH must, does not address the Amish objections and concerns. If they can't refuse participation in this animal identification program without penalty, even if 'only a threat', as a matter of freedom, they have grave doubts they will be able to ward off chipping the human members of their community without worse penalties. The States who are cooperating with the animal ID program are paving the way for national human ID programs, though bureaucrats in government prefer to separate the two. The Amish, for self-survival, cannot afford to make that separation.
Ms. Greiner's statement that the animal control program will never chip humans may silence such Amish objections in public, but it will never change their minds. The Amish owned animals are their property, not the State's, with all the constitutional protections therein. The questions the Amish are asking now is, "can we gain a constitutional ruling in our favor quickly enough to save our lifestyle, or will it come too late? If we can get a ruling in time, will the court still recognize those historical rights? That's a good question. End.
RFID Chips & Squidoo Crowd
How does the Squidoo Community feel about RFID Chips?
Minor RFID Victory in Wisconsin
Small Victory- Legislation being debated to ban forced chips on people
Amish communities in America are facing the issue of microchipping animals head on. Demands of the Federal Government to chip all livestock hit the Amish communities hardest.Farms the Amish communities run are small and family owned, with healthy free-range animals. For these small farmers, the principle of computer chipping their animals brings up strong resistance and alarm. Religious convictions, that RFID chips are the mark of the beast, means the demands of government to mark their animals brings it one step closer to marking their people. The Amish have fought off government infringement before.
The Wisconsin legislature seems to be trying to avoid a showdown with the Amish farmers, by working out legislation that bans forced implantation of chips in humans. Whether this allows the Amish to cooperate with the national VeriChip program remains to be seen.
The government animal program is problematic for other reasons than just documentation. There are many difficult questions the government simply hasn't answered.
Costs of chipping and monitoring the animals falls to the farmer, prohibitive for farms the size the Amish usually have. If animals are ever transported, it is the farmer's responsibility to report those movements. This applies even if the animal transports itself, for example, if it gets loose from its pen and wanders the area. Failure to report even those movements of an animal could result in expensive fines.
For corporate farms whose animals are constantly penned in from birth, escape issues are a non issue. For free range farmers, it does occur often enough to be a serious financial concern.
There is also the question of seizure of animals that will not be chipped by their owners. If the Amish community refuses to permit their animals to be implanted, the potential that the government could seize their animals is high. Expensive fines of $1,000 or more PER DAY for non-cooperation rack up quickly, eating up equity; the government could seize assets if the dispute goes on for an extended time.
The Wisconsin legislation does not deal with the chipping of animals, only humans. In Ohio, where an employer demanded employees be chipped for security reasons, concern is rising, and legislation for humans may be passed in Ohio.
It looks like the Amish community, with their free range family farms, will be the first sacrificial lambs in the mandated animal chipping program. 9/20/06 Margaret Schaut

This isn't a well known issue.....
Do you agree with the Amish that it is impossible for a Christian to accept radio chips either in themselves or in their animals? Do you disagree and think corporations and government should do this? Has this lense increased your understanding of the issue? Do you have any questions or comments? Please put them here!

This is really great information. Hearing how this issue impacts Amish communities was eye opening. I personally don't view this as a religious issue but more as a privacy one.
There is a really great book about the technology of RFID and its intended uses by corporations that's extremely informative. I'm suprised you didn't recommend it as part of your amazon list. The book is "SPYCHIPS: How Major Corporations and Government Plan to Track Your Every Purchase and Watch Your Every Move" by Katherine Albrecht and Liz McIntyre. They're also responsible for creating the consumer watch group CASPIAN - Consumers Against Supermarket Privacy and Numbering. You did give their website www.spychips.com a listing on your page but you didn't add any info. For those interested in seeing how far this invasive technology is being viewed by corporations and government there information is first rate. They are on the front lines of this issue. Again great job with this lense.

Yes, I agree with the Amish, about radio chips and animals or humans. We must pray for one another, crying out to God, for His Mercy, and asking Him to show Himself strong on behalf of the believing Amish and all other true believers, in The Lord Jesus Christ, across the U.S.A.! We need one another, and must support one another! I support the Amish!

I am not too familiar with Amish. No electricity? That would mean no Internet. Sorry to be naive.
Regarding whether it is possible for a Christian to "accept" radio chips in animals...
We should celebrate technology as God gradually avails it to us.
To me it is obvious that God already creates each manifestation of his existence with its own uniqueness. We can already distinguish ourselves each from another. To be scientific we could say each of us has a unique DNA code.
As Christians we will soon be forced to "accept" or "reject" the use of DNA scanners that humans will use to scan each other and animals. God already provides these built-in DNA-tags for free, upon conception of each new life form.
As administrators of God's knowledge that He gradually reveals to us we should accept our duty and not hide from or fear of it.
Merry Christmas!

Revelation 14.9 And another angel, a third, followed them saying with agreat voice, If any man worshippeth the beast and his image, and receiveth a mark on his forehead,or upon his hand,10 he also shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God. which is prepared unmixed in the cup of his anger; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimestone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb: 11 and the smoke of their torment goeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day and night, they that worship the beast and his image, and whosoreceiveth the mark of his name. Ignorence is no excuse because of Revelation 13.8 And all that dwell on the earth shall worship him, every one whose name hath not been written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb that hath been slain. Key words: every one whose name hath not been written from the foundation of the world in the book of life".
