The Amish Workshop
Most Amish children grow up participating in the work their parents do. Most of them, of course, farm, and so children grow up learning to handle animals, the ins and outs of land management, and even how to manage the money.
The parents also share their other skills, such as woodworking, building, canning, sewing, quilting.
As much as possible, this lense will give information about the various skills the Amish give to their children in their workshops.
In this picture, you see the chairs two young men, brothers, have built according to the skills their father taught them.

Extraordinary Quality
People often wonder why Amish furniture is different from most types of furniture. The answer is many fold.First being made by the Amish it is truly American made. You just wont find Amish living in China and other Asian countries where the vast majority of furniture sold in the US today is imported from.
Second the Amish way of life means that they avoid the use of large production machinery. While they will use small equipment that is driven by a drive shaft from a diesel engine like planers and the such. They will not use the large presses and other things that are required to stamp out & mass produce furniture.
Third. They have pride in the furniture they produce and consider it a statement of who they are personally. All the Amish builders I know refuse to produce inferior furniture. If it won't last a lifetime they will not make it. This type of dedication to quality is something that this country had many generations ago. Unfortunately the "gotta have it now" mentality most people have these days has led to the importing of cheap, poor quality furniture. True craftsmen are a dying breed but the Amish have proven time and again that they are here to stay.
Attention to Detail
Pride in Craftsmanship
Attention to detail is something you dont see in mass produced furniture. It's all based on tolerances and acceptable numbers of inferior pieces per 1000. With mass produced furniture the only time it's truly looked over is when it arrives in the customers home. That's when the problems are found. With Amish Furniture it's looked over for problems at each step of the process. From the wood that's selected for the various pieces to the final cost of finish that's applied. Then the whole thing is looked over again by the furniture store that ordered it for you. When you buy furniture thats made by the Amish you are buying the care and attention to detail through the whole process that few others have. True custom furniture dealers care about the furniture they sell and are only willing to deliver the very best. These are the reasons that Amish furniture is so different.
