Amit Goswami, Ph. D, Professor of Physics

Dr. Goswami is one of today's pioneering thinkers in science and spirituality. He taught physics for 32 years as a professor of Theoretical Science at the University of Oregon. He is currently senior resident researcher at the world-renowned Institute of Noetic Sciences. He is an advocate of "monistic idealism," the philosophy that defines consciousness, not materiality, as the primary reality.

Dr. Goswami has written several popular books based on his research on quantum physics and consciousness. In his books, among other things, he demonstrates how science and spirituality can be integrated and has developed a theory of survival after death and reincarnation.

In his private life, Dr. Goswami is a practitioner of spirituality and transformation. He calls himself a quantum activist. He was featured in the film and book "What the Bleep Do We Know?" and its sequel "Down the Rabbit Hole" and in the documentary "Dalai Lama Renaissance."

Dr. Amit Goswami points out that conflict is the one common aspect of all of our catastrophic problems in the world. Conflicts between materialism and religion are at the root of terrorism. The economic and environmental problems we face are conflicts between individual and collective consciousness of "ego values" (selfishness and excessive competition) and "being values" (cooperation, win-win philosophy, intuition, creativity, feelings, and happiness) which also are rooted in the conflict between materialism and spirituality.

He also says, "the major reason that health costs are rising is our fear of death and the conflict between ignorance and wisdom--again, materiality and spirituality. The decline of ethics and values in our families, our societies, and our schools is clearly due to this conflict. According to Dr. Goswami, "a spiritual economics must address:

· Satisfaction of emotional needs, positive emotions such as love, compassion, and satisfaction itself, both conditioned and unconditioned.

· Pursuit of meaning, including the pursuit of new mental meaning which requires creativity.

· Pursuit of spiritual and supramental (soul) needs such as altruism, love, and happiness.

And in truth, this ladder of needs is not entirely hierarchical. If one satisfies higher needs, the urge to satisfy lower needs actually decreases. The opposite is also true. If a lower need is satisfied, the demand for satisfying a higher need increases. In this way, strategy for a more suited idealist economics than capitalism is to address all the needs simultaneously.

Whereas capitalism is an economics of physical well-being based on the satisfaction of our conditioned physical ego-needs, idealist or spiritual economics must be an economics of holistic well-being based on the satisfaction of both our (physical) ego needs and higher needs (pertaining to the exploration of the vital, mental, soul and spirit)."

Dr. Goswami explains that the production of positive vital energy can occur in many ways such as improving the environment and promoting positive health. He suggests the best way to cultivate positive health is to "encourage the work places for ordinary people to have facilities so that their employees can practice positive health, practices such as yoga, Tai chi, and meditation."

He explains that the arts and entertainment industry is capable of producing positive vital energy or positive emotions, but needs to "shift the emphasis from negativity to meaningfulness and positivity." He says that " When we partake in good meaningful entertainment, we also feel positive emotions; we are consuming them. As we consume, we ourselves have the potential to become producers."

He suggests that many of today's spiritual "organizations are more interested in influencing mundane politics than investing in the supramental.....and that we may have to develop new spiritual organizations to do it."

"The best part of the story of subtle energy products is that it is mostly free. The subtle dimensions have no limits; we can consume a sage's love all we wish, the supply is not going to diminish. There is no zero-sum game in the subtle. There may be a bit of material cost of production. So one may put a material price tag on subtle products to offset this and that may not be such a bad idea because it enables people to be more serious about their intentions when they consume subtle products. Here is also an opportunity for the government to subsidize the subtle industry."

The Self-Aware Universe

Amit Goswami echoes the mystic sages of his native India and declares that consciousness, not matter, is the ground of all existence. He explains that the universe is self-aware, and that consciousness creates the physical world.

He calls this theory "monistic idealism," and he says it is not only "the basis of all religions worldwide" but also the correct philosophy for modern science. He says that once people give up the assumption that there is an objective reality independent of consciousness, the paradoxes of quantum physics are explainable. According to Goswami, quantum physics has laid to rest the materialism view of reality--the teaching that everything is comprised of atoms--and its tag-along doctrines of locality (that interactions between objects occur in local space-time).
