Amitabh Bachchan and Melody

Did Amitabh kill melody?

Rise of Amitabh Bachchan coincided with the decline of melody in Hindi film music. Or at least that's what is claimed. You see, Amitabh Bachchan was a complete entertainment package. Besides, his angry young man image did not allow much scope for music and melody. Amitabh tasted his first mega-success with Zanjeer. This was the first movie where there was not a single song sung by the hero on screen. I have read in film magazines that Devanand was approached for this movie initially. He refused to do Zanjeer because he had no song to sing on screen. Imagine!

So are there any melodious song that can be showcased in this lens. Scroll down and see for yourself. This lens showcases only those songs that has Amitabh singing on the screen. So songs from movies like Anand are regrettably not included in here.

There are an infinite Amitabh Bachchan pictures available on net without any credit. Would the person who took this picture please stand up so that I may acknowledge? Thanks.

To prove my point I start from the year 1973 - the year of Amitabh's rise to stardom.

Melody can be found even in such light hearted song as "sa-re-ga-ma'. Notice for most songs Kishore is the playback for Amitabh.

For the first time we hear someone else - Mukesh - giving playback for Amitabh Bachchan. In the superhit film Sholay, Manna Dey gave playback for Amitabh. I don't think Manna's voice goes very well for Amitabh.

Perhaps the reason why the perception that Amitabh and melodious songs don't go together is because of movies which have some of the sweetest songs were not a commercial success. Alaap is one such film. By the way, the song "Koi gata ...' does not have any Urdu words. A rarity in Hindi film songs.

I love the one stanza that Yesudas sings for Amitabh in the song 'Mohabbat Abdi Kaam Ki Cheez Hai'. Don't tell my wife, for the lyrics are very anti-love.

One of my personal favourites: Rim Jhim Gire Sawan. In that song there is this girl who keeps talking and flitting from one place to another. If I were singing, I would have given her one tight slap. So annoying!

I think I will stop. I have made my point. Amitabh was not responsible for the general decline of Hindi film music. QED.

Did you like the lens. Please give it a thumbs-up to show it.
