Ammonite Pendants and Products Make Great Gifts that are Millions of Years Old

For my birthday, a friend of mine surprised me with this ammonite pendant. He'd hand-selected the fossil at a gem and mineral show and fashioned the necklace himself, which made the gift even more special.

Ammonites, with their notable spiral shells, are one of the most well-known fossils in existence, belonging to a group of predators known as cephalopods, which includes living relatives such as the octopus, squid, and cuttlefish. These ammonites lived in the ocean between 240 and 65 million years ago, eventually becoming extinct along with the dinosaurs.

An Ammonite Fossil

Ammonite

The fossil is named for the Egyptian god Amon, because their shape resembles his ram horns. Ammonite was prized by the ancient Egyptian and Roman societies and was considered to have magical and holy powers.

The beautiful spiral shells of these long-extinct marine invertebrates are among the most sought after and recognizable of fossils, yet little has been published about ammonites outside of geological journals. Neale Monks and Philip Palmer look at the latest ideas on ammonite biology and ecology to present this detailed picture of a once diverse and widespread group of animals.

Neale Monks is a palaeontologist at The Natural History Museum in London and has written a number of papers on the evolution of beteromorph ammonites. Phil Palmer was a scientist at The Natural History Museum in London until his retirement, and has written extensively on fossil mollusks and stratigraphy.

    Lovely lens Deb,
I have lensrolled it to my lens on The Jurassic Coast, where you can literally walk on ammonites, but I have never seen such colorful examples.
