Help Amnesty International-USA Protect Human Rights In America

Amnesty International, well-known activist organization for prisoners who are incarcerated for acts of conscience, is mostly known for work to stop human rights abuse in foreign countries. In fact, A.I. USA, also a human rights organization, works to expose and eliminate human rights abuses on your behalf and mine.

Headlines get everyone's attention. Afghan cities are under siege by Taliban. Terrors and starvation seem to rule the day in global struggles . Failures in leadership the world over result in suffering and pain.

But, right here in America, behind the notice of bloggers, news organizations and many well-meaning activists, violence born of prejudice against women, children, and groups attempting to improve our world, persists.

Amnesty International is devoted to reaching not only places in the headlines, but also beyond the hotspots and popular sympathies.

Death by taser. Violence against women. These are two human rights problems in America. Do you think they are too much overlooked?

Purpose: defend and protect those who were made to suffer for their views.

Christopher Hitchens warns in a recent slate.com article that A.I. has "lost sight of its purpose."

Amnesty International has suspended one of its leaders for refusing to support a controversial endorsement by the organization of a former Taliban supporter. It's an old story, but it bears retelling. One day at the dawn of the 1960s, a lawyer named Peter Benenson was reading the newspaper on the London subway. He came across a small item reporting that two students from Portugal-then still a fascist dictatorship running a filthy empire in Africa-had been sentenced to seven years imprisonment for raising a toast to liberty in a public place in Lisbon. After a short cogitation, he decided to take action, and his open letter concerning "prisoners of conscience" was published on the front page of the London Observer. You may never have heard or read about this micro-event or its macro consequences, but I am willing to wager that you have heard of Amnesty International, which was the great tree that sprouted from this acorn. Its "branches"-the innumerable local groups that sprang into existence-have been responsible for the release of many political prisoners and the public shaming of many of the regimes that hold them.

What Is The REAL Point of the Economic Crisis?

Does Wall Street get it? Does Washington get it?

This video really opened my eyes to the effect on the poorest among us by the economic, Wall-Street-induced, regulatory inspired fiasco. The video originates abroad. The suffering is also in the streets of America.

It's bad enough to see neighbors losing their life savings and tiny businesses bite the dust. But, wait til you see how hubris among the wealthiest turns a hard life into one without hope.

A.I. USA is concerned that Tasers are being used as tools of routine force, rather than as weapons of last resort. Rigorous, independent, impartial study of their use and effects is urgently needed, according to A.I. USA.

What Is Hope, Anyway?

Some say work for human rights is naive. What would happen if A.I.USA stopped believing in "Hope"?

"Hope" is the thing with feathers --
That perches in the soul --
And sings the tune without the words --
And never stops -- at all --

And sweetest -- in the Gale -- is heard --
And sore must be the storm --
That could abash the little Bird
That kept so many warm --

I've heard it in the chillest land --
And on the strangest Sea --
Yet, never, in Extremity,
It asked a crumb -- of Me.
